This is incredible news, I can not wait. Hopefully the American audience will appreciate his performance style. After all who wouldn't right? Do you think his performance will translate well into American audiences? After all we do have a sleightly smaller brain here in America (some of you might recognize the pun from one of his tv shows)!

I don't think he'll play that well here. His t.v. show didn't fare well here either. I think it'll be a hit with members of our community, but I'm not convinced Derren's pompous style will play well to American audiences. I feel he's really have to make some adaptations, and from what I hear he's not willing to do that. There were rumors he was being peddled around Las Vegas too in recent years and from hat I heard this was the same concern.

The TV show's lack of success came from a combination poor promotion by the SciFi channel and a sense of sameness with the David Blaine street magic specials. I am not saying that there was a sameness, it was just the shared location of working on the streets that gave the public a feeling that they had seen this material before.
A live show can be something very different. If the NY theater going public feels that he is something new and they haven't bought this ticket before, then he could be a success. Derren's challenge will be in that Marc Salem has been a very visable presence in NYC for many years. Plus, there has been a lot of magic presented here. Derren's producers and the marketing team will have to work hard to position Derren as something unique and worth seeing. I think Derren can do it, but it will not be easy. Another challenge that is very difficult to see coming is what will be on Broadway at the same time as Derren. The Broadway musical of Catch Me If You Can opened to good reviews but was overshadowed by the Book of Mormon. Catch has closed and Mormon is still SRO. This things happens often and Derren could either be the most novel thing to hit Broadway in years or be overlooked by the public and the press focusing on something else. It's all a mystery and we will have to wait and see what happens. |

Both Derren and Richard are incredible performers, but I might toss out the question of whether those making the comparisons have seen both live? To compare one to another based on performances captured on video might not be the best thing. I have not seen Derren live, but I have Richard. His live performances are very entertaining and amazing. I have seen Richard perform close-up, parlor (at a lecture in Akron, Ohio) and on stage. When you are watching in person, you become intimately involved, whether or not you are the volunteer or not. When watching on a TV screen, you get to see either what the editor wants you to see or the entire stage from an outsider's perspective. But live, your eyes are not focusing on the master shot, rather they are being directed here or there.
Both are great performers, and has been said already, they are playing to different audiences. Just as a writer needs to know his audience, so, too, does the performer. And both do. Bobby

First, On Topic: If I can get to NYC to see Derren Brown, I will. He will be worth the time, money, and effort.
Second, Off Topic: I have seen neither Derren nor Richard live, and the only performances I have seen of Richard are those staged, controlled ones on his DVDs. I would gladly take instruction from either of them. I could go on and on about Derren's work, but I think his writings are more valuable. On the other hand, I think Richard's "Mystique" receives far too little attention in proportion to its merit. (It's possible that since I am not an inner-circle type of guy that I simply miss the attention). Ah, well. That's enough off topic. Separate from any comparisons to any one else, a visit by Derren Brown is a good thing. |

I agree as I've only seen Richard and Derren only o t.v. or videos. But from what I've seen Richard seems more engaging to the audience in performance. In my opinion the underlying message with Derren is "look at what I can do", where Richard's seems to be more of "wow, how can he do that?". Again just my opinion. And I understand with all the Derren worshipers here it may not be a popular opinion.

Mindpro,
Nice observation. While I would not travel to New York to see Derren (I live in Ohio), I would definitely travel a few hours to see him. Bobby

I have not yet had the privilege to see Richard Osterlind live, but as I stated earlier, I have seen DB a couple of times. On his latest show (Svengali) I participated in a Q & A act in Liverpool. Derren is very good at what he does, I have met him back stage and he does carry an ego. I suspect though that RO back stage does not seem as aloof. Anyway, these are merely personal observations and as I posted earlier - they are both great performers with very different persona's. Make no mistake though, both persona's are very deliberate and well honed. It is not a case of who is more competent, rather, who is more in vogue? I just wish I had some of their natural ability....
Finally, finally I stick with my original post which said for all of DB many many talents, the USA has some of the best mentalists around... If I lived there I would make sure I seen the Cassidy's, Osterlind's & Maven's live at least once in a lifetime.

Both are geniuses and excellent performers but only one of them can captivate a crowd of 1000 people for an hour and a half over and over again. It's one thing to have the best magic/mentalism show in town, and completely another thing to have the best show in town. Derren is one of the few magicians/mentalists who achieves the latter a year after year. Nimrod , Israel |

Your're right of course Nimrod but the variable at play is massive marketing and big big resources ploughed into stage shows! IMHO..

I am sure with the same financial backing the Mentalist's that I have mentioned would generate the same sycophantic postings as seen here on the MG thus far....

Nimrod, what do you think would be the reaction to "Bobby Cassidy" live if he decided to tour Europe with his shows? If he had the same financial backing and daily exposure from a major TV channel as DB has had - do you think that your opinion would still hold as much weight? I mention Bob as an example, Osterlind and CO would still command the same reaction. Never underestimate the power of "The Media.
IMHO.

I don't really get the controversy or comparisons. He's an entertaining performer in his own right, hence my interest. Can't we just leave it at that?

Well, I have to report that my intention is not to offend anyone on the Café. However, I am entitled to an opinion and I express that opinion without favour or prejudice. Perhaps the last comment is not directly about my last post, nonetheless, I am just writing my point of view on the subject matter in question.

Actually, my post was meant as a joke, but I rarely use smilies so when one is desperately needed I often forget.
Apologies to those who understandably took my post as serious. |
