Thought (on this) for the day: the hanging sequences are just there to allow you the opportunity to show your hands empty, true or false?

I think that the coins should fall in silently in the hat, because you have to be consistent with the rest of the routine (the invisible coins will not do any noise).
The hanging coins is designed to show your hands empty (I believe): Roth's solution is very elegant. |

The coin that goes in to the hat is NOT Invisable!!! Ie One on this hook, one on this hook, and one in the hat! So thay see the 3th. coin go into the Hat!

I'm a little disturbed when some people want to comment on one of John Ramsay's routine and can't even spell his name right
John RAMSAY Don't we owe this late gentleman some basic respect (if not more)?

Mr. O, That has bothered me too. RamsAy. Thank you for pointing this out! BTW, where can I find the best resources for his magic? That may make me sound ignorant but actually I'm still relatively new to learning all this GOOD STUFF! Thank you in advance.

On the NYCMS dvd series, Gallo has a great routine using a coffee cup. DeSouza's version and I believe Jean Emmanuel Franzis also have a version in the series.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

Lawrence O, thanks for pointing out the typo. However, if you have any personal observation or opinion about me please keep it to yourself or send a PM. Such remarks just undermine the whole discussion, and I can assure you that my interest in Ramsay and in the routine are genuine. As a matter of a fact, I am working on my own version that I will test in a front of a live audience in a couple of weeks.

I fell in love with Ramsay's work when I discovered the CYLINDER and COINS... then fell madly in love when I read 3 coins and a hat! The way these routines were designed was just brilliant...GENIUS!
Here is a video of me practicing 3 coins and a hat with music for the very first time. This was taken some years back. The video is kinda blurry.... Cheap cam... hahaha! I just recorded it to see how it flows and to see the choreography and timing with the music. Since then, It has been polished and performed in countless shows with great success. It is my humble opinion that this routine is flexible. Flexible in a sense that it can be presented as a close up routine as well as a stage routine. Thus the experimentation with music. Of course I use larger coins for stage. I hope to record what it is today after all these years. Oh... I must add that this routine though confusing.... with the right presentation and patter... It makes for a very clear and concise piece of magic. Cheers and Mabuhay from SUNNY MANILA! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Auyim6CNUGk Rannie

Hey Boss, that looked great, thanks for sharing. You added the element that a lot of people leave out when performing Ramsay's signature pieces--attitude. By all accounts, Ramsay was a "character" who played with the audience, and you pulled that off quite well with the presentation and the music. I'm eager to see what your later work on this looks like.
It's really helpful to see the original routine performed this well. It makes it really easy to imagine what the audience must be thinking. All that said, what do you guys think--I still don't get the feeling that the audience will "forget" that the coins were dropped in the hat.

Thank you Curtis for those kind and encouraging words. I am with you and Mr. Neighbors! To ensure that they don't forget that the coins were dropped in the hat, I make the dropping of the coins a major part of the routine. The other sequences like the hanging of the coins and the reappearance are already magical on their own. By that I mean... There is no need to further accentuate them. Having said that, I still maintain that they must be performed well and magical. I wish I have the time to video my present performance soon, but even in my old video, notice how I make the dropping important. I try to use a bit of acting to accentuate the drops. I try to look uncertain wether to drop it in the hat in the beginning... I look at the hat and point at the hat before dropping the 3rd coin...then gradually in the next phases seem sure that I want to drop the 3rd coin. I feel this subtle acting can draw meaningful attention to the dropping of the 3 coins in the hat. As you can see the hanging and the reappearance seem to be a very normal thing for the performer. Even the production of the coins ( the one from the hat) seem to be more important to the performer... I put more emphasis on that production rather that the ones from the sky hook which is just nonchalantly plucked from thin air. In the end, the physical picking of the 3 coins ( which were dropped visibly and reproduced again and again without going inside the hat) makes it more magical. Showing the hat empty and the clean display of the 3 coins completes this piece. For my present ending I use a topit for the clean up before counting the 3 coins cleanly and openly.
I hope I made some sense and that my writing and meaning is clear. Rannie

Okay, not to let this go too soon--today's Coins in Hat query: Ramsay fooled magicians with his approach, which was being three ahead. If you're out to fool magicians today, might it not be better to take a different approach? Instead of being three ahead, how's about being one behind?

Okay, let's talk about that--in John's routine, he never really shows the coins are in the hat. You hear them in the hat, and then they magically jump up to your fingertips, just the way they've been doing throughout the routine. Is this the best way to go? It sure solves a lot of problems. But at what cost?

Okay, let's try the one-behind approach. That's a lot of clinking in the hands to keep folks believing and then something less than convincing at the end. If you had some odd item loads upsleave and used such a construction to load the odd items into the hat for a surprise finish... sure.
BTW, add a Blackout coin as one of the coins and things do get more "convincing" and less angly.
