So this is just a bit of a brainstorm that, I admit, will unlikely coming to any fruition for me...but a fun thought at least...
I was imagining if there were possibilities of doing standard dove effects, but scaling it in a way that would replace the dove with a person. (OK, so no human body loads on giants...), but my first thought was a 'balloon to person' effect. Suddenly, I really began to like the idea of that image, so I thought it would be interesting to brainstorm some possibilities to accomplish that effect. I have 3 very undeveloped thoughts, but let the possibilities roll in! 1. It may be possible to use a scaled up dove tray, but I imagine you'd have to rework the gimmick to make it convincing at all. 2. With some creative designing, I bet a flash appearance frame holding a balloon could make a startling effect (balloon pops, puff of smoke, there the person is sprawled on the ground...a funny carnival vibe) 3. There might be something to just actually being inside balloon. We've seen the incomparable John Cassidy's antics of crawling inside a balloon, but I imagine if a balloon were brought out on a stand, person already inside, a lay audience wouldn't think the person actually was inside....this wouldn't be a stand alone effect, but might make for a cool moment with lots of comedic possibilities.. What other ideas might pop up for you? |

In the Jim Sommers book- Illusions you can Build there is a balloon to person effect with an enclosure and a slowly inflated balloon. Also, I seem to remember a Doug Henning special with a cart style pallanquin illusion that produced a girl from an inflating balloon.

The "Dizzy Limit" or "Cargo Net" illusion would work with either a large balloon or a bunch of balloons involved.

Kalanag, the German magician, did this in the 1950's, producing his wife, Gloria DeVoss in the opening of his show. And if I remember correctly, Horace Goldin also performed it in the 1930's. Everything old is new again!

You would have to issue ear plugs for the staff and audience if popping a 4 or 5 foot balloon.

Actually you'd be surprised... popping balloons that big really don't tend to be loud at all. The smaller sitfer balloons tend to have a louder report.

Craig, I DO remember that from the Jim Summers book! I was thinking that U.F. Grant had a version as well. The strange thing about large weather balloons is not just that they're not too loud when they pop but the cloud of powder that frequently erupts from them!

I believe our local joke shop has super large balloons that blow up to 3' or more. I just did a Google search and found latex balloons 3', 5.5', 8', and up to 18 and 25 feet sizes. Kind of expensive the 8 foot is $120.00 for one.

Clowns and Magicians do a stunt where you climb inside a large balloon. I don't know the supplier they use,
but I do know the extra large balloons sell for about twenty five dollars each. (Looks to be about six feet) Search climb inside balloon. Tom
