Nice calls.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

There are some very nice suggestions here.

Critter: I think that Trent Reznor is by far the most interesting of the current generation.

Bill: Tom Waits always makes me laugh. Good call.

Lobo: Funny thing about Jewel, isn't it? So much potential.

Yeah, maybe that's just something God did to make me feel better about her marrying that rodeo guy. If you're (Magnus, particularly) not familiar with Poe's CD "Haunted," I can't recommend it to you strongly enough.

Just placed a hold at the library. Will report back. Thanks for the recommendation.

Better thank me after you listen, but I'm pretty sure I'm safe. Smile

I'm also down with the Warren Zevon nomination. Good one.

...For a horse of an entirely different color, I'd add Danny Elfman of Oingo Boingo, who, in addition to his strange and fun songs (e.g. "Reptiles and Samurai") has some really poignant and philosophical ones as well (e.g. "I'm on The Outside," "Just Another Day," and "No One Lives Forever."

I LOVE Oingo Boingo! Used to listen the them all the time in High School. On Vinyl! (Not that it was the vinyl age, I'm not that old, I just sought it out in the used record stores.)

The Willie Nelson mentioned earlier was a good call too. He also does excellent covers.

Not singer-songwriter category, but speaking of brilliant lyrics, They Might be Giants.

I attended college one summer quarter at a ummmm...ridiculously young age. I had two courses, and a decent-sized break in between. I discovered the student union, and all of my quarters went into the Asteroids machine, or the juke box, where I literally played the same three songs over and over - Pat Benetar's "Heartbreaker," Styx's "Renegade," and Oingo Boingo's "Only a Lad." And for quite a few years thereafter, Oingo Boingo was my favorite band.

***, I had good musical taste early.

I discovered Boingo at the Ren Faire.
My friend Paul, who was a DJ, lent me a 'greatest hits' tape of theirs that I wore out before returning. Then I went and bought all their vinyl I could find.

Excellent choices, unfortunetly there is no one at this forum who has ever heard of Townse Van Zandt, Lucinda Williams, or Chris Smither, but you and me. IMHO you are a real music lover.

Uh, yeah I have. Had a cassette tape in my old truck that someone gave me.
Heard of Lucinda Williams too.
Not this Smithers cat though. That's Mr. Burns' sidekick, right? Sang back-up vocals on "Look at all these Idiots" from the "Simpsons sing the Blues" album? Didn't know he had a first name.

There are music consumers, and there are music lovers, and you are confusing the two.

If you don't like Monster Magnet and Iron Maiden, you're not a real music lover.

I never saw Lead Belly, but I have seen Muddy Waters several times at a suburban Philly coffee house.

Lobo
You got me there I never heard of Monster Magnet, and they don't play Iron Maiden on the college radio station that I listen to.

Please don't take my opinion to heart I was only complimenting Bill on his good taste. I am just an old 50 year music addict.

One of the good things about being old is that you remember things that others have only heard of. Of course they say if you remember the 60's you were not having any fun.

I'm still glad I got to see DIO when I did. The greatest metal singer ever. No contest.

T. Rex being awesome:

And Bauhaus covering T. Rex's Telegram Sam:

Although their Ziggy Stardust cover was better.

Saw Bauhaus live too.
