Okay, I literally have no experience in hypnosis.
I would, however, LOVE to be able to hypnotize people and I was wondering where to start. Derren Brown is a huge influence of mine and I'd like to be able to fuse magic and hypnosis in a few years. Can someone point me in the best direction? Thanks a lot Ben |

Hypnotise people to what end? IT is a serious question because the answer is different depending on your goals.

Ah okay, for entertainment purposes? Hypnotise someone to forget what I've said or hand me their wallet without realising they don't know me etc.

"Hypnosis, Where to Start?"...the beginning - education and training.

There are thousands of books, videos, MP3s etc. on how to do hypnosis that are sold every month. Yet, there are relatively few people who actually do hypnosis. This strongly implies that as a means of training, books, videos, and MP3s are generally unsuccessful. Can they work? Absolutely! And there will be people here who will tell you that they read one or two books and immediately started giving shows. They are the exception, not the rule.
I agree with Mindpro: Get Proper Training. Most trainings available are focused on hypnotherapy rather than stage hypnosis. But IMO, taking such a training--even if all you want to do is stage hypnosis--is okay. Learning the basic concepts is a great place to start. You can then expand that with books, videos, MP3s, etc. Books such as Zero to Stage Hypnotist in 30 days by Cressman, the "bible" by McGill, Deeper and Deeper by Chase and the works of Anthony added to the basics will expand on what you know. If you really want to do stage hypnosis studying acting, staging, voice and/or public speaking will help. One last thing: DB is a MAGICIAN who often uses the idea of hypnosis as a form of misdirection much as a kid magician or comic magician might use "woofle dust" to get attention away from where the real work is going on. Just because he says something is hypnosis doesn't make it so. |

But... and it's a big but. Derren is also an accomplished hypnotist. Read his books...

Reading Derren's books would qualify as "proper training".

Dmcraig is spot on.
Presentation and performance is more important than technique, Having been trained professionally in Hypnotherapy books by Dave Elman, Milton Erickson and the Bible for hypnotherapists " Deeper and Deeper " are must reading for someone who wants to really understand what hypnosis is. Then you can work on skits and routines from free online resources. Understanding the legal side to performing hypnosis for entertainment is paramount if you are within the U.K but not important outside it. Be unique Regards Dr Rob. |

With hypnosis, flexibility is important. If one induction doesn't work, use another. DB doesn't change inductions if one doesn't work. He doesn't change suggestions if they're not being accepted. In stage shows, some people will go into hypnosis, some won't. You thank those who don't and let them go back to their seats. Of the ones who are hypnotized, some will accept suggestions and others won't. You help those who won't to emerge from hypnosis, thank them, and send them back to their seats. By the time you get to doing more active skits, some people are active, others aren't. It's usually too far along in the show to excuse those who aren't active, so they are relegated to the 2nd tier while you turn the active ones into the stars of the show. |

Live training is your best source to get you up and running. I've really learned a lot and benefitted from reading Anthony Jacquin's book "Reality is Plastic" as well as the DVD set he put out through Head Hacking, "The Trilby Connection." Excellent materials from which to learn. Anthony really knows how to teach hypnosis. His live training courses are excellent as well. I've been on a couple now and I learned a lot, got some great experience, and had a great time as well. Hypnosis is a lot of fun. Hope you enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole as much as I am.

He comes here seeking legitimate advice, with enough intelligence to know his limited knowledge isn't enough and to ask for true guidance and direction, only to have another self-taught newcomer (or taught by his dad) to be giving poor advice. Once you have the knowledge, skills and comfort/confidence level you can then look at "just do it". |

Awesome review of Streetnosis Reg! Might just have to get myself and early X-mas present!
Posted: Nov 22, 2011 7:15am Reg, I've also heard through the grapevine that you have a new dvd coming out soon |

The grapevine is almost right!
I do have a download coming out which only my newsletter subscribers will be able to get hold of. It'll be "The Anatomy of a Show" and I'll be dissecting some of my recordings of a typical stage show, adding commentary and notes so you learn the what/when/why of a stage show. I'm also limiting the number of downloads available and no, it won't be added to the Streetnosis content. Later on, I'm planning to do the same with a typical street performance. Thanks! Reg |

Would it be worth it to take a hypnotherapy class?
And what do you all think about Richard Bandler? I was thinking of reading his book Frogs into Princes... |

Jesse Lewis Loyal user 227 Posts |
Any education is better than no education so yes a hypnotherapy class would give you a basic knowledge however it probably would not be suited to street or stage hypnosis. when I started I read several books and yes I am one of the few who learned soley from books and dvd's however I do not suggest that you do that. There are many free resources to learn hypnosis online spend a week and fourty hours going over the options you have out there and you will learn alot. go towards what you actually want to learn if its street great sign up for nathan thomas's newsletter it contains lots of info if serious about stage spend the fourteen bucks on ronnings stage hypnosis center and buy his book. If therapy as good a place as any to start is the hypnosis motivation institute which offers a beginers course on hypnosis, sure they all try to sell you crap but you can get a good basic knowledge of BASIC hypnosis online which if you have that going into a course you will get more out of it. I don't support any of these sources other than ronning and the reason I do is because he is how I learned to actually make a full time living with hypnosis
the most important thing you can learn about is how to manage an abreaction somthing that in the performance world is hardly ever talked about. Now that I have said that let those who think just because I have only ten posts on the Café bash away.
