Tom Selleck was considered for Indiana Jones.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered for Fezzik in the Princess Bride, and was originally cast as Robocop but couldn't fit in the costume. OJ Simpson was considered for The Terminator, but ultimately judged "too nice." Others?

C. Thomas Howell was considered for Marty in Back to the Future before it went to Eric Stoltz (and then Michael J. Fox).
John Lithgow was considered for the role of Doc Brown in Back to the future. He was also considered for the role of Hannibal Lecter. (Not in Back to the Future) |

Molly Ringwald was the initial choice for Julia Roberts's character in Pretty Woman, but she turned it down.

Harvey Kitel(sp?) began filming "apocalypse now", only to be replaced by Sheen. Some of the Kitel footage is apparently in the film, mostly the boat on the water-no close ups.

Gary Grant turned down James Bond or was rejected because he only wanted to do 2 pictures.
Burt Reynolds turned down One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. George Raft turned down several big roles that went to Bogart and made him a big star.

Steve Reeves was considered for one of the Spaghetti Westerns that made Eastwood an icon. Can't remember which one right this second.

Thank heaven for Francis Ford Coppola because Paramount had wanted Robert Redford to play Michael Corleone in The Godfather.
Paramount was originally considering Raf Vallone for the part of Vito Corleone. Brando got the part and Vallone ended up playing Pope John Paul I in Godfather III. Danny Thomas wanted the part of Vito Corleone so badly he was planning to buy Paramount so he could play the role. Except for Vallone who is a superb actor, I could not imagine a Godfather cast consisting of Danny Thomas and Robert Redford. But things went well for Redford obviously as he starred opposite the legendary Paul Newman in the Academy Award winning classic The Sting. On another note, Stuart Townsend WAS cast as Aragorn for The Lord of the Rings and was on set for one day. Viggo Mortenson was then given the part. It is of course common knowledge that Jeffrey Hunter was cast as the original captain of the USS Enterprise and did the pilot called "The Cage." NBC didn't like it and asked that it be re-cast. Shatner got the role and "The Cage" - which was never aired - became part of the only two part episode of the original Star Trek titled The Menagerie. Wynona Ryder was Coppola's first choice to play Mary Corleone in third Godfather movie. She was coming off of an illness and had to turn down the part. Coppola's daughter Sofia was given the role - to less than stellar reviews. Ryder later worked with Coppola on Bram Stoker's Dracula. Interesting fact however is that Sofia was actually in the first Godfather as well: she was the baby baptized during that amazing scene where the baptism takes place simultaneously which Michael "taking care of the family business." Also an interesting footnote: Father Carmello in the Godfather movies WAS an actual Roman Catholic priest - gotta love Coppola! Ahimsa, Vlad |

I wonder how old Sofia was before FFC decided it would be ok for his daughter to watch the scene she was in!
Also wonder - let's say Redford or Thomas had got the role of Vito. Would we now be saying, "Brando was up for the role, but I just can't see him as Vito Corleone. He'd probably start screaming "Hey, Stellaaaaaaa!"

There was the old Scarlett O'Hara maze - so many tested (and you can see many of the screen tests even today), but most think Vivien Leigh was by far the right choice.
On the other side of the coin, if I remember right, Clark Gable was long known as the only one to play Rhett. An old story says that, before anyone was cast in GWTW, Spencer Tracy would greet Gable with, "Hi, Rhett!"

Shirley Temple in the Wizard of Oz;
Judy Garland in Annie Get Your Gun (there's some nice footage of that). The rumor that Reagan was the original pick for Casablanca is evidently without foundation.

This one irritates the heck out of me for the fact that they ALMOST got it right...
Jude Law should've been Sherlock Holmes and Robert Downey Jr. should've been Watson.

I always pictured Watson as a slightly fat guy. Not out of shape fat, old-timey fat.

I'd have cast Adrien Brody. That guy looks like Sherlock.
I don't know, I liked Downey. It's not a far stretch from his role as Chaplin, which I still think was his greatest film.
