Nut Waltz - I agree with Andrew about Pete Biro and Dean Dill's "Nutty Surprise" being a better version of this... in plot terms, it puts the trick squarely back in cups and balls territory - some interesting stuff with the walnuts, then (to paraphrase Dave) WOW! WHERE DID THAT GIANT STEEL NUT COME FROM?!?!
On Digital Dissolve, I was going to just say meh... use Greg Wilson's "A Questionable Trick" instead, but then having read Chessman's post about large dark copper crown/silver dollar, and a visual transformation, I can see how doing this gaffed might be stronger because of that moment. I guess the strength comes from two things - how sure they are of the initial position, and how visual the transformation of your coin is. There's then a beautiful moment when they realise that their coin must also have changed, and look at it. With AQT the first part is better because of the element of spectator choice - they've not only seen both coins and heard them in their hand, they can feel both, and they've had a free choice of one. That's stronger than the magician just putting a coin they haven't seen in their hand. But where DD wins is the visual tranformation. With that in mind, I might just try ending AQT with more visual spellbound move. This will either be a knockout or a truly terrible idea, I'm not sure which. Excellent show chaps. |

Gents - fully take on board your point about chiffon scarves. I was (as always on these reviews) just saying it 'tongue in cheek' to hopefully give a comedic slant to my review.
As for the 'coins thru silk' trick itself - well nobody has yet mentioned an English magician - Chris Power. I first saw Chris perform this effect around 1980 - it literally made his reputation. See here: http://www.opusmagazine.co.uk/?p=990 I also added a comment a few months back that you will see below the clip - proving that I do love this trick really!

OK, we all have to remember that this show is part information and part entertainment. This may explain the snarkyness. In a nutshell, what they said about the Nut Waltz is, "It is an elegant routine with quality props that you will want to practice, but it has no final load and you probably not perform it that often."

Hi guys, just something I wanted to add to my previous post above (sorry for my english):
I didn't at all want to be disrespectfull to all those who work in bars, in fact I think it's a nice place to work, for sure ! BUT magic isn't ONLY bar magic, that was what I meant, there are certainly for amateurs like me other places where you can do parlour magic or even -like the stand up version on the DVD- street magic, why not ? It could replace cups and balls, and you can add any climax you want with a little imagination. If Milton Kort, Dai Vernon, and as I personally saw, Roberto Giobbi (last lecture in France a few months ago) do/did such routines with nuts/glass, I certainly wouldn't say like Dave&Craig that this is only 10% or even 53% worth. It's their opinion because it won't work for them, but do not think it won't for others. By the way I do not know Mr Goni at all, just wanted to say that for ME this is elegant magic and that's what I like. And sorry again if I offended somebody about my bad line on bar magic... That was because of Dave's stupid -in my opinion- "you won't do it at the bar, so why buy/learn this ?"

By the way your English is excellent - and a darn sight better than my French!

Same here mimo. I was only, in my feeble way, trying to interject a little humor in performing bar magic.
As for "Nut Waltz" if you like it that is really all that matters. It looked fine and quite visual, but I think that their issue was that it had no ending, which I’m sure with a little ingenuity could be solved. As someone else mentioned, Craig and Dave throw a lot of humor into their reviews and in the end I think they were really playing off of each other just for laughs. Go for it and make the most you can with it. As for your English, it seems just fine to me and a hell of a lot better than some on the Café who, supposedly, speak English as their only language!

Modern American audiences don't want to watch the same effect three times in a row with hardly any variation. The effect is puzzling, but ultimately it's boring. Sure, perhaps a performer like Tommy Wonder could make it interesting, but why not just perform a better trick! There are tons of other one cup routines that are far more fascinating to spectators.
Plus, why are you using nuts? Of all random objects to use, you're choosing to use giant nuts? I just don't get Nut Waltz. |

That's all I can say before I start saying what I really think. Randi |

I'm here to say that I respect any "personal" opinions on my routine. They may like it or not, it may be useful in England or not.
But first, the original routine never had "final loads", and so many classic plots in magic does not - 3 fly, coins across etc... - I did not include any final loads in the demo video (I did perform this WITH 2 final loads being bottles) because I found it too obvious for magicians. Really. So I prefer to include the explanation of how to do it in the DVD. That being said, any educated and knowledgeable magician will only hear "...the gimmicks are good..." and "..it fooled you!..." in the review, dismissing the rest, wich is basically personal tastes, and disrespect to Tommy Wonder and the creator of the trick. Come on guys, anyone with two brain cells knows that the trick can be done with different music, with final loads, etc... it's very flexible. It's pretty strange for me that they give those numbers to this effect and 85/75 to "Signed", my other trick, wich wasn't a big success. Anyway, I will make a prediction: future reviews by good and known magicians will be a lot more positive than this... mayniac - Giant nuts? what is that? those are walnuts, and I suppose the original meaning of using them was to show a normal, REAL, solid, examinable at the end object. Want to perform with plastic dice? Go ahead! I don't get the point. The trick works the same... |

Some "magicians" just don't get it! Please excuse me if this is crass, but is there such a thing as "nut envy"? Dev/ |

I mean I am 40 years old and making videos where I intentionally don't bother to fix myself up... But thanks none the less. As far as everything. Nut Waltz is good. It's good thinking. Now we all know that it's a trick that can't be performed every where. But if you have a place to perform it, like a high class restaurant, then it would be great. It has it's place, but sure.. it's limited. As far as final loads go... I agree.. come on? Adding a final load into the routine is not an innovative idea. It should be an obvious idea for any magician to add to any routine. He did the right thing, he put the final loads on the DVD, he just didn't show them on the video. Why does everything have to be spoon fed to us? Like I have been saying... The trick is about noise. Take that away, then yes... just do a cup and ball routine. It is what it is people. Randi |

Hi Randi
Instead of using the final load you used (it ws funny though), why not load the tube with another glass with 3 walnuts after you first tell the spectators that you are going to make the glass and the nuts vanish. You then lift the tube a little to let them see that it didn't work, and then say that; the opposite might have happened. Then show two glasses with three nuts in each. The noise of the loading might be a "small" problem though. Vidar |

Great video Randi, and no....I never saw that final load coming and quite an appropriate one considering the trick involved nuts! Very clever! lol

Mariano G. I don't think the review did you any harm. It's all about personal taste. Personally I wouldn't perform it as it's not my thing and I can't see where I would perform it. However, it looks well made and well thought out and is a fooler to some. I'm sure you will get good custom from those who like the style. The product you have given is way better then 99% of the junk out there.

with all of the annoying laughter on the clips. Randi Rain, I enjoyed the surprise final "Load" (pun intended)! |
