There are actually two terms for shut eye.
They can be con-men or Believers; readers who have their eyes shut to the obvious that they are not really reading. Did you know that? Would you like to argue against that? Any comments?

In our world, I've never heard of the term "shut eye" as a reference to con men. A con man knows exactly what he is doing and why.

In my mind, it also applies to those who dogmatically close their eyes to the possibility that the abilities in question could exist.

So are the three choices: shuteye to the fact there's nothing there... conman... Real psychic?
Is that it?

To me there are readers such as myself, who use cold reading skills, etc, to do readings. There are shut-eyes, who believe they have a gift. There are the con-men, who know exactly what they are doing. And there are the mediums, who are con-men. Ourselves and the conmen do the best readings.

As mentioned on the bizarre-forum thread, 'shut-eye' is just an insult made up by a group of people for another who don't agree with them.

A shut eye is when one's eyelid covers the eye. You'll know you're personally experiencing this phenomenon if when you try to look out one of your eyes, you don't see anything but darkness.
Some people hear voices.. Some see invisible people.. Others have no imagination whatsoever.

I'd always heard the term referred to the querents who could not be convinced that the psychic phenomenon they so believed in was a fake. Geller had a Kajilian Shut-eye followers. So did a Medium in Carmel that I knew.
The readers who believed (or knew) they were legit were just called Readers or Psychics. The Cold Readers were called fakes.

I have to agree with Carl on this. Every mentalist I've ever known has used the term "shut eyes" to refer to "believers."
These alternative definitions are all new to me. Good thoughts, Bob |

Experienced, scientifically-oriented physicians called those who believed in invisible things they called germs "shut eyes." Example: the "scientists" at the New York Times called Dr. Robert Goddard a shut eye because he believed that rockets would work in space even though in that vacuum there would be nothing to push against. It's similar to the insult of "Heathen" used against non-Christians who lived outside of cities (i.e., in the heaths) by early Christians or Carneys who call doctors, lawyers, judges, scientists, etc. "rubes." The truth is that people who think they know everything always have insults to use against people who dare to think differently or have knowledge in different areas. It's also similar to the term that most people call those who think they can entertain but just bore the holy cr@p out of everyone. That term of anger and insult: magician :rotf: :dancing: |

Dmkraig,
Could you please cite five or six sources quoting, "Experienced, scientifically-oriented physicians who "called those who believed in invisible things they called germs 'shut eyes?'" Can you cite four? Can you cite two? Can you cite even a single one? And could you please cite the date the New York Times article appeared in which "scientists" called Dr. Robert Goddard a "shut eye"? By the way, I can cite multiple sources that explain that solar eclipses are caused by the moon coming between the earth and the sun, and not because a dragon is devouring the sun, as some thought in more primitive times.
