I know some of you perform Whit Haydn's 4 ring routine for kids. Is it for a specific age group? I have seen clips of Whit performing it with a young girl on stage, but it seems like the audience were mainly adults. I was wondering if a group of 5 - 8 year olds get what is gong on? Please don't think I am knocking the routine or Whit for that matter. I love both. Just curious how it plays for you guys that do it.
Thanks, Jack

I've done it for adults and kids. It just doesn't play that well for youngins, at least for me. It's now only in my adult shows. However, if you can find a child to assist you in an adult show, it adds punch in the "cuteness" factor.

The kids want to keep telling you that the other kid isn't really taking the rings apart. If you can find a funny way to exploit that, it can play well.

Personally, I use it when I'm doing a 'family' show, where there are adults present (and paying attention). If there are only children under the age of 8 or 9, then I don't think it plays well. They just don't really get the joke. For a mixed group,it plays well. I do it mainly to amuse the adults and teens, and then go right into a strong 'kids appeal' effect.

I have used bits of Hayden's Routine for a kids routine. Especially the part that the rings don't actually come apart for the volunteer. Kids love it.

I always use my regular routine for kids. But I always talk silly and childish to keep their attention and make them laugh. It is all in the presentation. Here is a video of me performing it for magicians using my kids manner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FS78iI6cwh0

I've seen your clip before Dynamike. Nice routine. I enjoyed watching it now as much as I did the first time I saw it!
Thanks. Jack

Depending on your character you can "compete" with the child to reconnect the rings every time. That's how I play it. "And now mine are back, let's see if you can- What?!? Hey, remember this is MY show. Ok see if you can do *this*" (Rinse and repeat, with more frustration, quicker head turns to see if they caught up, only to be flabbergasted that they are ahead of you again). Kids like you being fooled/one-upped/whatever.

As someone stated above, I also use it in my shows, but I always use an adult as the volunteer. Always gets a great reaction.

I agree with many of the comments above about doing Whit Haydn's routine for younger kids (below the age of 9)--they don't get the comedy, especially the do-as-I-do sequence that is at the heart of the routine. However, one performer's routine that does seem to play very well with younger kids is Kimmo's. He structures gags with the rings that kids do get and laugh their heads off at. His routine is well worth studying.

Thanks for the heads up on Kimmo's routine. First time I've seen it. Great reaction from the kids.

I use it in every show for all ages of kids and it works really well. I shorten the routine just a little for kids. Sometimes kids will get a little too excited when trying to shout to me that the volunteer isn't really getting the rings apart but I just act as if I don't understand and keep going.
Here's a video clip (scroll down the page a bit) with a 4 year old boy as the volunteer. The audience was about half young kids and adults: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Capstone-T......80782012

Hi Chris,
I'm thinking about adding the Haydn routine to my kid show, and would love to see how you make it play. But the link you posted goes to your facebook timeline. Do you still have a video up? Thanks. |

If you're thinking about adding LR to your kids' show, Christopher T Magician's new book "Beyond Look Don't See" has a really strong routine, in which all the laughs are at the magician's expense, and the magic is hilarious.
Those who have spent years learning lots of fancy moves for LR, will be shocked at just how easy this is (there is one slightly more complicated move). It's pure entertainment, a routine that I plan to add to my shows very soon. |

Thanks Potty and Charlie. Potty, thanks for the book recommendation - it's pricey, but it may be worth it (beyond that one routine).
I think the Haydn routine could be tweaked for kids - as has been mentioned, if it was made shorter and the kids screaming out the obvious could be made part of the fun. |
