What's your policy on doing shows when you have a cold or flu? I am doing 3 shows today with a high fever and the sweats. the last 3 days have been filled with mucuus and other general yuckiness. I am past the contagious stage (according to medical people) but still feel like crap. The show must go on though, so I persevere. What would you do?

When I feel like you say you are.
theres no way I could perform and present a good show.and most people would not wont to be around you even if you don't think your contagious. sometimes the show doesn't have to go on. todd |

When a cold gets that bad, there's no way to perform. I'm in the habit of treating myself at the first sign of a cold with Goldenseal Root, used for no more than 10 days out of a month, and Ester-C. The worst that I get is some post nasal drip, so I may take a cough suppressant for that, along with some throat drops. That way, I can talk during my shows without much coughing and I can get some much needed sleep.
The popular over-the-counter remedies are things that I'd never take for a cold or flu - they don't help the body to fight it. |

Yeah, I hate when I get sick cause I never know if I should cancel. Sometimes before I call the client I find a replacement and ask if they want that person - that way its not all bad news when I call them.

Thank you, Greg. Unfortunately, There was no cancelling or replacement. As for the shows, I am very good at masking any problems and doing the show with the same energy as normal. I just pay for it later. I just finished the 2nd party and so far no one is the wiser. just a little more perspiring but I do that anyway. I think the fever broke as I am only congested now and not burning up. one more party than off to bed!

As the saying goes, "the show must go on". Luckily, I am still able to do my shows even when I have been sick with colds, fever, a muscle injury, an eye injury and the worst, a cough. Sometimes, doing a show is a good cure because you tend to sweat all of those bad toxins. Just be sure, you are taking the right fast acting medicines.

I just finished a series of shows while have conjuctivitis(sp?) >Both eyes were swollen and red and yearing. It was quite bad.I can't cancel npr find a replacement as it was a contract for the tour, So I had to wear my shades and go through the show as I normally would.
It's tough but the show has to go on.unless you know that you are going to collapse and can't make it.Then I suggest a cancellation. Nothing worse that collapsing on stage! Only you know your body enough whether you can go on or not. Trying to find a replacement is the next best option because a client will normally ask for one.If you really tried your best both ways, then pray that the clent will understand and try and make it up to them when you are better.

If you don't feel very good all I can say is SUCK IT UP, AND GO DO THE PARTY. I have tossed my cookies in the parking lot, went into the mens room washed my face and hands, did a great show, then I went home, and got back into bed. My God you only work a couple hours a week, and have the nerve to ruin a little kid's birthday party. If you are that big of a wus why don't you just give up entertainment, and get a day job.
When my adrenalin is flowing I feel no pain.

OK, I'm with Angello, although maybe I would have sugar coated it a bit. So maybe I should thank Angello for telling it like it is. I've done parties with a bandaged hand and I've done them with the sweats.
They pay good money to see you...The show must go on!

My friends call me Al. I had open heart surgery, and was doing parties 2 months later. There is no way to sugar coat it, either you are a pro, or you are a big wus. If you do the show you can wipe the sweat off your face with $100 bills.

AL;
Why did you wait two months to return to work; are you a big wus? You should have “SUCKED IT UP. My God you only work a couple hours a week; and have the nerve to wait two months to return to work… |

They cut my sternum in half, opened my chest like a can of tuna, and when they finished they closed my rib cage, and held my chest together with a couple of staples. I did however do a free show at my favorite Pizzeria's Christmas party after three weeks of recovery, but free shows don't really count.

I was back to performing about three weeks after double hernia surgery and about a month after open lung surgery. That was just dealing with pain, so all I had to do is get to where I wasn't grimacing. I can't take narcotic pain relievers for more than a day - hate the feeling of not being in control.

That's nothing! I was legally dead for 2 days and still did 4 shows the next day! Suck it up!
I'm with you, Al. I had to do the shows today no matter what. And since I figured it was the little darlings that probably got me sick in the first place, turn around is fair play. (For those of you who not only have a stick up their butt but can tell me what kind of wood it is, the first and last parts of this message were jokes!) |

I've only missed one show due to illness. It was a walk around gig and I was in the hospital, and that was 14 years ago! Now, let me agitate you all further and preach to you about preventive medicine. You know, all those things the experts tell you, exercise, eat your vegetables, get your weight under control, and I get my antioxidants in with a glass of red wine with dinner. Yes, staying healthy is difficult sometimes. Alan, I’d like to know more about Goldenseal root. Quote:

Ken,
YOu bring up a good point. Although we all get sick from time to time, I do think we owe it ourselves and our audience to take care of our own bodies as best we can. And, that does include eating properly and exercising. Several years ago a very well-known superstar magician came to visit me. My wife made a light lunch for us. This person is very fit but still mentioned that he had to watch his weight. I think there's a lesson to be learned from this. I also NEVER leave the house without several bottles of hand sanitizer, especially when I'm performing for younger children. Gerry |

I like a magician with a sense of humor good luck my friend. How many of you have started a show sick as a dog, and as long as you are performing all of your symptoms disappear until the show is over, and then you are instantly sick again?
