All,
This is something that, I belive, is very important in mentalism (or any performing arts) that has nothing to do with secrets, new ebooks, or the like. This post has to do with a performers apperance and how crucial it is to ones success or failures. I don't intend to imply that we all have to be in great physical condition (lord knows Im not), yet we must consider our apperance at all times. I recently watched a Reel Magic DVD that had Max Maven as a guest, within the interview Mr. Maven noted that his first effect was indeed his apperance. Now, Mr. Maven (or Goldstein) has a very "odd" look about him, something that I would not nor could not ever pull off. Yet, this got me thinking about my recent physical decline and how an audience perceives me and my "first" effect. In addition to my weight gain, I also reflected on my hair cut choice, clothing choice, and grooming. I often wear a sports jacket with blue jeans, something that I consider proffesional yet relaxed (perhaps a bit of a throw back from the eighties), but this works for me. When I work for a "swanky" venue I might wear slacks, but even then I often opt for blue jeans. Also, considering that confidence is crucial to a great performance...it seems that we should be confident about all matters; from our routine, moves, too our apperance. I know that if I showed up for a black tie event wearing jeans and a t-shirt, I would feel awkward and not be myself, let alone be able to perform. Perhaps this post will be disregarded as nothing new or of interest, but I think we should all take a look in the mirrior and think about our first effect....I want mine to be about thirty pounds lighter I have a busy schedule in December, but I don't plan on that holding me back from polishing my chops, routines, and perhaps most importantly...my apperance. Respect, Billy |

Have you read an old book called 13 Steps. It has something about appearance that I think is still correct

"How can an audience believe you can control their minds if you cannot apparently command your own?" so said a now skinny mentalist friend of mine. An audience will judge everything about you, so you should at least acknowledge your control over as much as possible.

Mark,
I agree that anyone can be confident and attractive, heavy or not. Its an attitude. However, I still think that we can all look at ourselves and change something about our physical apperance that will enhance our audiences perception of us. It can be as simple as a piece of jeawlery or a new tie. Perhaps you are in shape, but think..."hey, I would look more convincing as a heavy set performer". Maybe you wear a suit and tie and want to go for the criss angle look, whatever it is I am sure that most of us can do some cosmentic changes to make the audience appreciate us more as performers. respect, Billy |

Billy, when I look in the mirror I wish I was a hundred pounds lighter! Twenty years ago I was 170 pounds, looked sharp. Now I am 270 pounds, and I know I don't look good, unless I wear a good suit. You are right; audiences judge on appearance.
It constantly amazes me how many hypnotists smoke and are overweight. Thankfully only one applies to me, but when people after a show ask does hypnosis work for weight loss, I have to laugh.

If you buy 2 copies of 13 steps from England, that would probably set you back about 30 pounds.

Stop wearing jeans. They are not performing attire unless you are under 20. Show your client where the money went.

Image is VERY important! If you are big and comfortable with the way you look, I am fine with that but don't dress down! My very good friend Oscar Munoz lost a lot of weight recently but when he was a big man, he still dressed to impress. I have been inspired by Oscar and embarrassed about buying a pair of pants that had a 40 inch waist and elastic stretch material for room to grow. I lost 34 pounds in three months and I am down to a 36 inch waist. I do not starve myself as I eat 6 meals a day! It is a life style change and is not difficult to do.
I also ride a bike at least 12 miles a day on most days and 20 plus miles a day on the weekends when I can. I have a stationary bike for bad weather days and I work out every other day. I am extremely happy with the results and was borderline with high blood pressure but not anymore! Glad to hear your realization and your efforts to change your situation! Good Luck! Jamie

I am originally from the Midwest and still recommend wearing a suit. In my opinion, is it better to be overdressed than under dressed. Also suits can be dressed-up or down depending on the venue. For example, if you find that it is a much more relaxed setting when you arrive, you can take off the jacket and tie and open the first button on your shirt for a more casual, yet professional appearance if need be.
