Emotions aside, I'll have to say Horsemeat Sashimi IS fantastic.

To be honest, I've been wanting to try horse-meat for a while. Apparently they butcher a lot of horse meat around where I live, but it is mainly exported to Japan and Belgium (among other places).

Horsemeat enjoyed a brief spurt of popularity in the US in the mid-1970's. The fad did not last very long. (I must admit, though, that it has an excellent taste.)

In my grandparents' day, though, it was a regular staple.

Good thoughts,

Bob

A staple from the stables. Smile

It is nice though. Haven't had horse in a while...

After haggis, lutefisk, whole mushy cod livers, etc., horse meat sounds pretty tame.
I'll never eat dogs or sea slugs though.

My dad said that when he would go deer hunting in the '40s & '50s they would get horsemeat steaks from the local butcher.

I would have a difficult time eating horsemeat. Sheer emotion.

I can never quite work out why people are squeamish about eating different animals. People happily eat pig (I own two and they are far more intelligent than my dogs), lamb and beef but horse and dog just turns a lot of people off.

Why do we draw the line at various animals, why not just eat anything that tastes good?

That's what Dahmer thought, too.

I'd rather go cannibal than eat a golden retreiver. And, as I said, I've eaten some pretty far out stuff. I even like Durian!

That's when my grandfather regularly purchased it from the German butchers in Hoboken, N.J. He used it to make "roulade," beef rolled inside a tubular horse meat shell. It was a family tradition at Christmas time.

But apparently not enough to warrant one of these:

There was a horsemeat market in Venice when I was there a few years ago and I meant to get in to pick up a couple of steaks to try. But I never got around to it. I've heard it's tasty though. We have an exotic meat market here in Seattle. Perhaps they'll start stocking equine cuts now
