I'm wondering if anybody has any thoughts on Jay Sankey's Brainwash. I love blank deck tricks. This sounds good, but to hear that there are no deck switches and the deck can be examined baffles me. It is also a "trick" deck because it can be added to a regular deck. Any ideas on if this should be purchased or not?

Sankey is telling you that he has come up with a nice routine using an old card force. If you like the idea of the routine it would be a good purchase. If you are looking for a cleverly tricked deck I don't think this is it. (Just my opinion based on the demo).

I'm with you, Jeff. This is beyond baffling. My jaw hit the floor just watching the promo. “No way!” doesn't say it strongly enough. Looks to me like this might just be one of the most mind-boggling routines to come along in a long while.
If this is what Jay says it is, it looks like a real miracle. And I believe what he says. Jay is a master of deception, but not in his promos. I trust him not to mislead us in his description of "Brainwash." I have watched the demo 4 or 5 times, and this is what he says: 1) The deck of cards used has been in play and used for other tricks. (And the deck he's holding looks ordinary to me.) 2) The effect is based on an old principle, unfamiliar to many, including magicians. 3) Spectator has a 100% free choice. (He emphasizes this quite a few times throughout.) 4) Deck is wrapped in a paper napkin which spectator holds. 5) There is NO DECK SWITCH. 6) Spectator opens napkin to find a completely blank deck, save for the chosen card, of course. 7) This blank deck can be closely examined. (It really does look like a good old blank deck.) 8) This “very special” deck comes with the effect, and it is high quality. 9) “You might be able to find a cheaper version of this deck, but it would look crappy after using it a few times." (This baffles me a bit.) 10) You can use any brand of cards WITH this deck. (But there's no deck switch. Huh?) 11) He emphasizes at the end that everything can be examined. OK. If the blank deck can be examined, that rules out the method for a lot of other blank deck effects. I'm sure you know what I’m talking about. And the other familiar method has been ruled out (no switch). So what is this? Do you coat your deck with slow-acting bleach?! The only thing I stumble on is 2) and 9) which seem contradictory. If this is an old principle unfamiliar to most people including magicians, how come cheaper versions of the deck can be found out there? Maybe he means he's putting an old idea to a new use? But he doesn't riffle or dribble the deck; he fans it out and hands it out for examination. I don't think the key to this routine is the force. I presume any number of forces could be used, though who knows? And he says repeatedly that they have 100% free choice (though he doesn't say no forces are used). The key, apparently, is "this very special deck" that comes with "Brainwash." The written part of the promo says, "Includes specially-printed cards you can use with ANY BRAND OF POKER-SIZED CARDS IN THE WORLD!" Hmmm. A specially printed blank deck? He must be using "printed" figuratively, or as a synonym for "manufactured." PLEASE understand I am not fishing for the method. I only want to know if this effect seems completely baffling to others, too, so that I can stop thinking that I might be crazy or something. If anything, I'm saying, "This seems to be in the miracle class, so we should all probably go out and buy this, 'cause it looks like a killer effect." (And that is what I will no doubt do, after my next pay check comes in.) The key elements here are starting with a deck already in play, not employing a switch, and ending with an examinable blank deck. And that sounds impossible. So I'm guessing you could really fry a lot of people with this. Has anybody gotten this? What do you think? No, don't tell us how it's done, of course; but how does it play to an audience? Does it blow them away? Are you glad you got it? I've never been disappointed by a Jay Sankey product, and I have quite a few, so I will be ordering this. But in the meantime, I am curious to know if anyone has tried it and fallen in love with it. |

Guys, here is what Jay says:
1) "The effect is this..." 2) "From the very moment you start the trick there is no deck switch". At the end of the effect the spectator is left holding a double blank deck which he can examine and one normal card. There are no deck switches from the very moment you start the trick |

I think Jay should come clean and tell us how its done.

Mike,
I'm wondering if you mean to imply that the deck you start with only seems to be a regular deck (i.e., this is the effect, not the reality) when in fact it is a blank deck (because there is no switch - so the deck you start with must be the deck you end with). Nah, that doesn't make sense either . . . Is everybody hopelessly confused now? I sure am. |

I took the implication to mean that no deck switch takes place after the start of the effect. In other words, if you've been doing other tricks with a deck, leading up to this trick, you'll switch decks before this effect begins, and thereafter you won't switch decks. As the effect begins, the deck will look just like the one you've been using, and no switching of decks will take place during the effect.
I don't know if that's the actual case, though. Heck, I don't even know for sure if that's what Michael was getting at. Somebody spend $20 and let us know the answer to the former.

Jay informs that the deck isn't switched once the effect has begun, which implies that if you are using a normal deck for other routines up until that point, then his deck will need to be rung in before this particular effect commences.
This is a simple, direct effect using a very overlooked method of...influencing a spectator's choice of a card, shall we say?
It's all in the reflexes.

I'd like to see an actual, proper demo of the effect being performed. I assume we didn't get that because Sankey's concerned that the effect would be easily reverse-engineered if we saw the exact presentation.

Wow, it did sound good. Like many of you have said, he must switch the deck before the effect begins. I would be interested to hear feedback from someone who's bought it, because if it's done the way I'm thinking, then I wouldn't be very impressed. Like you say, an actual performance of it would be good.
Having said all that, I've always been impressed with Jay's stuff in the past, so I hope my method will be proved wrong. Tim |

I would like to see a real work demo, not just Jay explaining what the trick looks like.

I agree, It would have been nice if Jay had just done a demo without all the sell, so you can concentrate on the magic itself.
By the time he was done I almost forgot what I saw.

Half way through the promo I nailed a solution. Props to Sankey for some clever subtleties during his spiel. Disclaimer: I do NOT have the effect and I do not plan to purchase it.
Use yer noggins me buccos ... the method is staring you in the face here and in the promo quite subtly and whispering in your ears in the promo. Ahimsa, Vlad PS: Please do not PM me about a solution. |

Often, the out-of-fashion method/prop (handkerchief) of an older era are updated (napkin) to create an effect.

Great posts, you guys. I don't mean that you have given away anything, just that there's good thinking here about things like when the deck is switched and all that.

Wait a sec. In the promo, when he's talking about the selection of the card, he shows an apparently ordinary deck and flashes the top card as the "selected card." That doesn't seem possible if you have already switched in a completely blank deck. That blows away my idea of how it's done.
|

Grampa Wizard New user 93 Posts |
Revision of the above: No, the actual selection is made by the spectator's making a cut, and he emphasizes he can cut anywhere. It's a bit later in the promo that JS shows the top card as if it were the selected card . . .
