During my last show, I did the SILLY BILLY VERION of the coloring book....
The kids through out the rest of the show would scream erase..erase..erase
What would you have done?

Teach them a new catch phrase for each subsequent trick. Better start thinking of them now before your next performance. For example, if you do the growing flower trick, you can have them say "Grow, Grow, Grow!" You can also teach them a tongue-twister, like "Buggy Baby Bunny Boogie Back to Burrow!" to make your rabbit appear.

I would just soldier on, and the next big-bucket-O'-laughs effect should get them off it.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Use it as your final trick.

I would laugh, that's funny.
I often just stop for a moment in the show to giggle at the things kids do.
I might say it with them.

If it really started getting out of control I would stop, put on my friendly but serious grown-up voice and tell them:
"Oh, I'm sorry, I can't keep doing the show if you keep that up."

Might look over at the direction of the coloring book and say, "I think the pages are as blank as they are going to get!!! But good job. Lets see what we can do next!"

I like the ideas of laughing with them, and teaching them another catch-phrase.

I agree completely. But I might try to erase the erasing before I bluntly said to stop.

If I were you, I'd try to figure out what triggered and see if I could do it every show.

I would have said, "I will need more volunteers. The ones I will pick are going to be the quiet ones. If you talk, that means you do not want a turn."

I've done this is almost every kid show I've done, and I've never had this problem! Go figure! But if I did, I would make it a repetitive part of the show. Do a trick, they say "erase", go over and pick up the coloring book. Show them all the pictures colored! Tell them it's apparently not working. Do another trick, go back to the coloring book. Show them all the pictures blank... you get the idea.

Kids make a great audience, you just have to learn how to roll with them.

First, lets step back and appreciate the power of Silly Billy's routine. Is there any other routine that can come close to getting that kind of powerful reaction from the kids. That routine is truly amazing. The kids go nuts!

I like the idea here of doing the trick last in the show. If you cant recover, then end with it.

I find I just plow thru to the next trick. if it too is a strong routine the kids will forget about the erasing.
