Holding two as one in a particular packet track and there's about centimetre gap between the cards (particularly with the one that gets palmed off). So the trick is hopeless without pressing the cards for a number of hours.
How do you maintain your packet tricks so that the cards are flat? I use a Porper Clip for my working decks. I guess the only solution is a Porper for packet tricks and spares of each packet trick... |

Bow the cards a bit as you hold them. That's what I do anyway.

Even with bowing or pinching, you could drive a bus through the far corner of the double.

I've never had your particular issue with a packet trick. I keep them in a plastic or leather wallet and if they bow at all, they all bow the same. Even if a card were bowed it couldn't possibly bow when I am holding it as part of a double.
You might need to describe how you are holding the card and perhaps what packet trick you are refering to. Quote:
...the far corner of the double Does this mean you are holding the two cards at one corner? If so, I think that is your real problem. You might be using a technique that absolutely requires flat cards. I work restaurants and my deck is often worn. I've never assumed my cards would be perfectly flat so I suppose my handling has evolved to handle this. |

Are you talkin' bout a packet trick from a (well used) deck? (eg Twins / Twisting the Aces) Or a separate standalone one? (eg Twisted Sisters)
Can't say as I've ever had a problem. Twisted Sisters has been replaced a few times because they got a bit grubby - but they were still flat. As said above - a good quality wallet should do the trick. JOL do some neat specific packet trick wallets. |

As far as flattening individual cards I use my Norm Neilson card press, which works nicely. (Though for a thorough flattening you have to leave them in for a few days, and some extreme warping will never fully straighten out)
Though it sounds like your main trouble is holding a double made up of warped or substandard cards. My first bit of advice would be to get new cards. If that's not feasable, it is possible to hold even the crummiest pair of cards together in a way that will pass by an audience. As Cameron said above, bowing the cards helps as it is a subtle way of pressing the two cards together. The other thing you can do, is frame the double card in such a way that the audience gets little to no time to look at the edges. One protected grip for the cards, is to hold them in a modified biddle grip. The main difference is that you cover the entire inner edge with your thumb, and cover the entire outer edge with your fingers (primarily the middle finger) and bow the cards slightly. With this grip there's only one edge showing and if you turn your hand over in a moderately quick manner the audience never gets a good glimpse at the edge of the cards. Now this grip might not be natural for use with the packet trick you're doing, but you can use the idea to modify several different grips for your needs. But seriously, get new cards if you can.

Anchorage has it right.
Also, Larry Jennings is great on how to handle a double. |

Another thought is whether the way you handle cards causes them to warp prematurely.
I've found that most moves can be done with a more delicate touch, and modified so that it causes the least amount of bending in the cards. Of course some moves bend the cards as part of the method (buckle count comes to mind) but often they can be substituted for other methods, or just done more subtley so there is less extreme bending going on. I've got packet tricks that have lasted me years, and are still fairly straight. If you handle the cards roughly then they will warp quickly, and it can be pricey to replace the cards often if it's a gaffed set from a magic shop. Hope this helps, Matt

If you're still looking for a packet card clip you might want to check out the Shuber Plates, that are being offered at Lybrary.com. I haven't tried them, but it looks like a good solution.

If it's possible, you may want to consider a high-quality deck such as the Erdinase (or similar) deck. I've found that they hold up well to the slings and arrows of card handling. When I've had this problem, I put the warped cards on a table under a heavy dictionary for a day or two and that helps a lot. As I hope this does.
Happy holidays.

The only way that I could imagine such a problem is if you have the cards in an inside pocket of your jacket, without a case to protect them, and sweat is warping them. I often keep packets in leather or vinyl cases, sometimes in a coin envelope. I've never had a problem with vinyl cases, but have had problems if the cards are in something porous when I'm really sweating.

Leave 4-5 playing cards out on a table for 3-5 days, and don't touch.
They warp naturally, with different bent angles to each card. so far I've had over 100 individual bee, tally ho, bicycle, t11 and E cards warp on me within 3 days of use. I'm starting to think it's the humidity. I'm gentle soft in my handling. so no to your thoughts of tough rough hands messing the cards up. card clip and weights do not work to flatten them. I'm going with cheaper production cost and materials here. |

If cards warp on your table, get a hydrometer and a dehumidifier. Keep the relative humidity between 40 and 60%.
