I hear you Andre.
The only parties go to are those I work. My life is is quiet and sad. I'm turning into the cat-lady who lived nextdoor to me when I was a child. :kitty: Tony |

One thing I have learned: When attending a party, never casually mention that you read palms. If you do, your party is over. Before you know it you will have a queue of people all expecting to have their palms read. Bad move.
HOWEVER... if I had known how to read palms (& the tarot) in my youth I would have gotten laid a lot more.

I really don't like playing the piano or guitar just 'cos there's one hanging about at a party, or if people force it on me.
However, there's a time and place for everything, and it's not unheard of. And that includes a bit of mentalism. Usually it's not the judgement of whether I should because it's unprofessional - it's the judgement of whether I'm capable by the time I've been convinced it's a good idea. |

I quit half way through the course because it was just ruining my enjoyment of movies - I was always looking for the subtext and the hidden meanings. It's the same kind of thing I guess. BTW - according to the film studies course I attended, the opening sequence of Blade Runner is all phallic. Just so you know.

I feel it takes at least 5 years of performing to allow a routine to mature and get really good. After that, it continues to get better. I tire of learning new effects and I'd rather not start from scratch. If I do add something new, it won't be difficult (in it's technique/mechanics) as I want to concentrate on the performance. Also, any new material likely won't be drastically different from what I've already done in the past. Oh, and my wife is the worst person to try new material with! She's so critical and will notice anything different about my mannerisms. |

I am not a "Performing Monkey" for anyone. Like a few have already posted, a lot of people who know me don't even know that I sometimes do shows. I like it better this way. As regards to where do I try out new material, normally after I have praticed it a zillion times at home, I will test it out on a complete stranger, usually in a coffee shop or, perhaps on the street. Depends on the effect really.

I used to read Tarot at parties all the time, anytime I was asked to. I was flattered to be asked, and loved being the center of attention, awe and approval. Eventually I realized I was spending each party talking to boring people, and missing all the fun. I'm a slow learner.
Years later I was at a very mellow, bright and exciting party and noticed the gal reading cards over in the corner. Isolated from the party and the people. She was A center of attention, but was missing the real action, the real fun. I didn't envy her. I wondered how long it would take her to let it go. Now, I'll do a Mentalism thing if appropriate, but it seldom is. It makes the party heavier. Better I do a string trick and keep things light.

Next time you invite any of your other proffesional friends over ( lawyers, accountants, doctors, etc ) ask them to hear your legal issue, do your taxes, or perform surgery at your party -- would it happen? Of course not -- the notion is ridiculous -- why is this any different???
The want to be the center of attention comes from the amateur mind set -- see the above example about the magic club.... J

The situation was brought home and pointed out quite clearly on last seasons The Housewives of Beverly Hills on Bravo. One of the housewives had a girls' night out party, her friend, who happened to be a medium was there. She was asked to do readings, she declined saying it was her night off. The ladies bickered and said if she was a medium she could do the, why else would she be there if she wasn't going to fo readings? The kept asking, and berating, finally she relented and was not happy. It was not a pretty sight.
I've been in that situation, people find out you do palm readings, they want them. They take offense when you decline, some become insulting. You can even give them your card and ask them to make an appointment, but that does no go over well. For me, unless I'm working, I don't go. I realize I'm missing out on business potential, but I'm also missing out on working all night for free. I'd rather stay home and read a book. Tony |

Quote: One of my best friends is a litigator and partner at the top law firm in the US (Cravath). When he comes over, he is more than happy to sit and listen to my small legal problems -- because he is my friend. He has done it many times for me. There is nothing ridiculous about this, and to say that makes me wonder if you have friends in this position. The interesting thing about this thread is that there is so much interpretation in play about the "party" being envisioned. There are situations where probably anyone would feel offended if they were asked to perform, and situations where most of us would agree to do at least a couple effects as a service to a close friend. The wild discrepancy in the responses is because people are envisioning totally different scenarios.
On 2011-12-04 21:02, Jay Are wrote: Coincidentally, I was just last night at a private party. There were 6 couples there, including my wife and me -- I have known everyone who attended for at least 20 years, and while I have seen all of them this year at some point, we have not all been in the same place at the same time since our last gathering (which was a year ago). Late in the evening, the hostess, a dear friend, asked if I would perform. I agreed to do a short set, four effects. Two of the people present were professional musicians, and have in years past performed at parties in my home, at my request, as a service to me, their friend. They also performed at my wedding. So of course I agreed to do a short set for them. Being the center of attention was not my goal, obviously (though I was, at that moment). So the next day, when this thread is posted -- I am of course thinking of what was, for me, something that happened just the night before. What is apparent is that we are not all thinking of the same scenario. Of course, there are many times where I have been at parties and could have been asked to perform where I would absolutely have declined. But to talk about this as ridiculous or amateurish?? It really depends on the situation, doesn't it? |

Guess I'm in the minority here because I end up doing something about half the time. I don't just perform because I want someone to give me money for it. I didn't get into magic and mentalism because it was a business decision--I got into it because I enjoyed doing it. So if I'm at a party and someone sincerely requests it, or I'm just in the mood to have some fun, why wouldn't I? People appreciate it and have fun, and I have fun and get to try out whatever new ideas I'm working on. Depends on what the social gathering is, how I'm feeling, who's there, etc., but yeah, I enjoy performing still and I don't always feel someone has to pay me for it. Magic and mentalism can be a gift to people, and I like to give.

That is just like my other mentalist full time job, I get asked a lot to do stuff. I turn them down a lot but sometimes I have to give in. Go along to get along and all that. And yes I do love the art also. Even though I stress a lot before big shows, it is the feeling of the adrenline and after its over with I am addicted to. :kewl:
