Nipps, plated swords are usually nickel.

Yes and no. You're right, I missed a segment.... in between the copper plating and chrome, a nickel plating process is used to strengthen the chrome's adhesion.

Straight up nickel only plating is a definite no-no when it comes to plating metals, usually reserved for coining but not for high end surfacing.

Brett, is there something else you wanted to say or just quoting your own comment? Smile

Nickel has been a tradition for quite a while, without the chrome.

Harley, if you don't mind me asking, where do you get your information? I can tell you that I get mine direct from "Industrial Plating and Electropolish Handbook" and "Forging Industry Handbook" (they're about 1-1/2" thick, printed in the 50's and 60's). I also have a small library on welding, forging, metalworking and similar reference. For some odd reason I devoted a good portion of my life studies in all fields of metalworking. If the bottom drops out with my current job, I know I can fall back on a good welding career at a starting salary of $30/hr.

Yeah consider yourself lucky, you haven't wore your hands out with 20 years of bad welding and typing habits. (carpultunnel and arthritis are starting in on me)

Nipps, I was performing before you were born. I've also done some metal-working...welding and casting, longer than I've been performing.

Nickel is a thing some now-dead guys discussed. I think it's also been mentioned in a couple of books. Is it the wisest thing to use, given current knowledge? Probably not, but it gives a beautiful finish.

My 1929 model A has nickel plated head lights and radiator shell. But in 1930 Henry Ford switched to solid stainless steel. I didn't know untill recentley that they were manufacturing with stainless that long ago. I love the look of old nickel but I like the stainless sword. By the way I did my first public act with the sword swallow today and it went great.

Added note: swords were never plated. They were/are polished by hand and ground to a sharp edge/point for the sole purpose of killing and maiming. But I'm sure someone here will try to discredit what I just said.

Swords were never used to kill, just plate and swallow. I looked it up on the inter-webs. No need to thank me.

Duh, were we not discussing swallowing swords?

Nickel resists the corrosion of stomach acids, and looks good too.

A sword is a sword, and nickel is horrible for corrosion resistance. Doubt me? Put a nickel in a cup of soda for a week and tell me what happens.

There is no need for me to relive 1991-1995.
