Has the library come through for you on that Poe CD yet?

I've been meaning to write a review. I've had the cd for a week and listened through twice.
For those who missed it, Lobo recommended Poe's Haunted. First impressions are very strong. The songs are smart and well written, and the arrangements are musically interesting. Thanks for the recommendation, Lobo. I'll listen again during the commute and see if I can give a more articulate review this evening. John

I used to have that on tape in my old red pickup truck.

I dislike writing reviews, but I promised, so I'll give what I can.
To me there was something unsettlingly familiar to Poe's voice. It was only on the 4th or 5th time through the album that I found it. Her tone and phrasing are very similar to Chrissie Hynde's (most notably of The Pretenders). Fortunately, Poe has much better pitch control than Chrissie. Haunted is clearly haunted by Poe's father, (digging around a bit, I discovered that he died some time before the songs were written and Poe found some audio cassettes with his voice that she wanted to use, but was troubled by the sound of his voice). In the title track, she notes, "One more look at the ghost/Before I'm gonna make it leave"--smart stuff. Every song is a discussion to, about or around this haunting figure. Musically, Poe sings long phrases with very small intervals, giving the songs a strong but dark texture. The instrumentation is dominated by dance-rhythm drums, incongruous with the lyrics and vocals. The result is a continuous drive into darkness. It is always clear that you are going somewhere, but it is never clear where it will be. If I were to make comparisons to more familiar artists, I would miss the mark somewhat by noting that the lyrics have the frank honesty and slightly detached wit of Alanis Morissette's best. The overall feel of the album is what you might get if Roger Waters and Sarah MacLachlan collaborated. As a final thought, the album Haunted shows a unity of theme, imagery and musical language that you don't see that often any more. Like The Wall, you could listen to one song at a time, but why would you? The randomize button on your ipod would disrupt this album. Like all of my favourites, the whole album is significantly greater than the sum of the songs. Sorry for the rambling and likely incoherent review, but there it is. Thank you for the recommendation, Lobo. John
