So,
This was not at a paid performance, but it could have been. I was working RO's BTCS to great success in the last few weeks. The reactions where all very good and I was getting really comfy doing cards with my mentalism "act". However, while performing at a bar last night, again just for fun, I was having a great time with a pretty little thing...untill I took out the cards. Let me first say that I wowed her with R2D2 (thanks again Doug) and was going to walk on that note, as there where more pretty lil things to be entertained. As I was thanking her for the drink, I was getting up to walk away when she said, "show me something else"....I love it when they ask for more. I decided that she was sober enough to follow instructions, so I did a RO effect with his BTCS. The effect went over very well, yet.... after she was done freaking out, she grapped the deck of cards gave the a shuffle (I was like noooooo, in my mind of coarse) and said "Let me show you my card trick". Now, keep in mind that I am use to doing bar magic and I have seen the 21 card trick done a million times, so I am ok with seeing it again. The problem was that she wanted to show me a cart trick in return for the "card trick" I showed her. I left the bar thinking that maybe mentalism isn't my thing....becuse Im still just doing tricks. I thought about my "patter", but decided to blame it on using playing cards. I know it was my fault in all reality, so back to the drawing board....one day I will be a real mentalist Respect, Billy |

Billy,
don't sweat it, I use RO BCS all the time, and it all depends on your presentation and the way you carry yourself. You don't need the BCS to entertain and try to present mentalism....heck...I have had the same thing happen to me, where a person took the BCS and shuffled it up, and then proceeded to ask me to read their mind, so it is very simple. All I do, is a std riffle force, or classic force, etc etc, and then I tell them I want to be fair, so I hand them the deck and I turn around and they get to put the card in the middle and reshuffle. I then never touch the cards again, and proceed to communicate with only the minds. I ask the person to think of their color of their card, and then suit, and number or letter, yada yada yada....i play it with different outcomes to read their mind, and at the end, they are in shock as to how I was able to read their mind, when they had a free selection(so it seems) and everything was fair since they shufffled and kept the deck. Now you know that it all depends on the way you present the effect not the system or trick in itself. When BCS fails for some reason, there are many ways you can still present it. BTW with the RO BCS I present at different times with different people 2 cards in pocket card calling para optic vision ACAAN, the Alain Nu version Mnemonocois by Tamariz All this with just the BCS, since I have it memorized. The simplest card force can take you a long way, trust me, when not using BCS! Alex

Billy,
Next time keep walking. Your not a trick monkey or maybe you are. It's your choice. The moment you decided to stay and do another you just lowered your self value. That's why you feel bad, because you are torn by your ego and magician roots. That need to please her cuz she asked for another effect stems from your ego needing satisfaction, but it is a bit like candy you get the quick rush but then crashed as your unconscious realized what it did. You want to be a mentalist but are still not yet letting go of that magician mindset. Keep on growing and reevaluating yourself. Decide if on what you are at your core. Maybe you can't be the mentalist you want as you are really truly the magician. There is nothing wrong with that, if that is the case. Do mental magic then. But figure out your core self and keep growing in the truth that becomes revealed. Walter |

Don't do cards. At least not until you are a seasoned mentalist.

Billy , first of all, congratulations, you are doing it on real audience, that´s the first step.
Now take this experience and learn from that. The conflict isn't with the cards perse , rather is your attitude towards performance, and the best of that is that is a learning skill and you can learn it ! don't treat your performance as something trivial. Yes , you can repeat your the same effect using a st**k, but you need to do that ? Mentalism and playing cards DO work and there are a plethora of examples. Max Maven, Richard Osterlind, Bob Cassidy, Sean Waters release a document recently about Card Mentalism, etc. Just take notes, learn from that experience and go on.

So the problem was she shuffled your cards after the effect was over? That's a hassle, not a failure. You bring multiple decks ready for BCS, right?

It's all context. You were performing at a bar "just for fun." That is how you were perceived by this girl-
as someone at a bar doing tricks just for fun. She offered to show you her trick just for fun. Sounds like she enjoyed your company. At least she didn't tell you to buzz off. |

Internetguru: I think the point of Billy's story is his disappointment that the pretty little thing saw his performance as a card trick rather than a demonstration of a special mental ability.

Ah got it. Sorry for being obtuse.
I think if you are doing walkaround mentalism in a bar, you are likely going to be associated with a magician. People do tricks in bars. Presentation set aside (since that is obviously a major factor), some venues are more consistent with the persona of a mentalist than others. |

All,
Thanks for the feedback. Let me say this, I feel like I am an experienced mentalist...yet, mentalism doesn't pay the bills yet, as my card magic does. In regards to the stack, Ive been performing for years and don't need the stack to do effects...I just wish she didn't mix them, as I had to un mix them later and that wasnt really the point of the story, just some texture. Mr. Cassidy, yes..I was pleased that she didn't tell me to buzz off. However, this is part of the problem. I live in a smallish community that boons in the summer. I am a bit of a local celeb, but as a bar magician...so this bites me in the butt at times, perhaps this was the case. Yet, I had never met this particular gal. I have a performance tommarow, some 100+ miles away...I plan on doing walk around mentalism. Hoping that the booker audience has never seen me before, so I can really shed my playfull non mental facade. Not that I don't plan on just having fun, but when you are seen as a trickster then its harder to pull off the "look deep into my eyes" bit (not that I say that). Overall, my cheif point was that I sometimes hate my performances when I know that I didn't pull off what my mentalism character is meant to be....but I will get better, or bust. Respect, Billy |

I wouldn't be giving it up billy. I remember a few years ago I performed the BCS and I had a miss. The guy had dropped the bottom half of the deck so it was a guess. He apologized for messing up the "trick". I felt the same way you did after that but re-worked all presentations and took a look at what I was actually doing. Needless to say, I have been performing RO BCS ever since with great success.
So cheer up, have a pint and take a look at what you'r doing such as your presentation and framing of the effect and get back on the horse. If you really feel that it's not for you, then you still got your magic to go back to, just do what works for ya. Darren

Forget about the mentalist / magician worries... you seemed to miss the point, you engaged the girl and who knows where it could have gone if you didn't worry so much... you could have followed up after with... "Ah, enough with tricks... do you want to see something more than a trick? Something... special? I will read your mind and emotions... hold out your palm..." take it... etc.
The key is no matter what happens, reframe, use it, reframe, use it, proceed... and redouble the effort to the plan... divine her phone #... Or in short, next time, if it happens again, it isn't over, you now switch it up with an engaged person and mind fry.

Also it is worth noting (maybe) that with close-up mind reading believability has to be built up, or they will assume it is just tricks. You need to demonstrate that you are getting in their head more and more over the course of 3 pieces. And almost everyone associates cards with tricks unless you clearly make the distinction between slight of hand card magic and what you are going to do for them, as a point labeller. Then it works fine. Usually.

Ive been a busy little mentalist over the last few days. Did my gig away from my home town and it went very well. Did anohter gig in my hometown last night at a christmas party for some big time corporate VIPs, it went even better. Perhaps I wont do mentalism in the bars anymore, it seems like after large consumptions of alcohol, people get more skeptical and there hand writting goes to sh*t, lol. I will be posting a few clips later on if anyone is interested.

I think the trouble is feeling disappointed when the performance turned out to about about your audience instead of yourself.

People love being deceived in bars i.e. Bar tricks / bar bets and scams which you do on them, and then show them
This angle can lead to mentalism based stuff, but more on the psych side. You can hook them with the psychology of scams and then do mentalism as shrink. |
