Interesting. I always had luck with a permanent marker. What kind of paint did you use?

I've had some paints react strangely with very strong magnets, such as you are dealing with. I can only assume that these particular paints have some metallic compounds that react with magnetic fields. I've even seen some paints conduct electricity, even when dry.
There are different types of permanent markers, too. Sharpie makes a king size in a metal body. I've found it works better than typical sharpies for some of the things I do. Regular Sharpies tend to show bluish or purplish on some surfaces. I'd first make sure the magnet face is very clean, and perhaps give it a light buff with a very fine sandpaper, maybe 400 grit or higher, just to put a little tooth on it. Then try the marker again. Just thinking out loud here, but there is a chemical commonly used by trophy and engraving companies to blacken the lettering on brass plates. I wonder if this or something similar would work on the magnet face??

I believe most Testors paints DO, indeed, contain metal particles.
