In today's Wall Street Journal (Sat-Sun Dec 10 issue if you wish to find it online) I read a review of a new book titled Magical Mathmatics, written by Persi Diaconis and Ron Graham. I thought y'all would be interested in knowing about it. The book discusses such things as the Gilbreath Principle and the Farro Shuffle and apparently goes into the math that makes some of these things possible. You don't need to follow the math to understand the book. It appears to be a fascinating book with lots of magic included along with the math. One of the writers, Diaconis, studied with Dai Vernon for ten years in the sixties. Other things discussed include math used for predictions, which might be useful in the Penny for your Thoughts Forum as well. Might make a nice Christmas gift for any of us!!!
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about? Smile

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

I'm taking an educated guess to say it was written by the same Alex Stone who performed at FISM and wrote this nice expose ... http://harpers.org/archive/2008/07/0082095

I just bought Magical Mathematics not too long ago, and I loved it! I'm still going through it.

Here's my review, including a preview of the book.

"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
"The dog did nothing in the night-time."
"That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes.
