Absolutely. I always felt that Banachek's PK Time manuscript was completely undersold. It should have went for $100 minimum considering the effect is a total blockbuster
So if an effect is on par with PK Time, and even if it takes only one page to explain the workings, then a very high price should be placed on it |

Unless it was supporting a friend, probably not.
I don't need to buy more material regardless of the pagecount or the quality. Tony |

Yes, absolutely. In fact, I have several that are only one page and a couple have a few more. While many of these in my collection are psychic oracles (as they are sometimes refereed to)the information is of great value regardless of the price tag. Some were in the low 4 figures. Yes, it was worth it and worth many times what I paid. That said a few of these have paid for themselves many times over.
While it is also true, many would never put some of this high end stuff to use and seem to only buy these sort of things to learn some next level information that is not available to others. For this type I say for the record, think about it before you buy, could that amount of money be better spent on something you may actually use for your show? High end materiel is not for everyone this type of materiel does have its place and these manuscripts are often very limited generally published less than ten for those over a 1000 and 20-25 for those under a thousand. I will also point out that there are some very under valued works as well that were also limited and these types of items should be snatched up with in the first few hours but with the tube and torrent generation it seems they want to wait for it to come on TV or something before they shell out the 5 dollars to have some real gems. |

If it truly was groundbreaking and I knew that I would perform it, then yes. The problem is validating these conditions before spending the money. It would likely require seeing it performed. Manuscripts for lower cost -- not a gamble. Similar to Tony I don't really need more material, but new routines spark ideas for me. I invest in them for this purpose. But a high priced manuscript, I would have to know I would use it, and that it was powerful.

If you sent it to reviewers I trust without telling them the proposed price and then asked them if the manuscript was worth that extremely high price, and if they then said yes, maybe I'd buy it. Those reviewers would have to have names like the ones Iain already listed above.
I was thrilled with PK Time when I bought it for $15 a decade ago. I would have been unhappy paying $100 for it, thought $30 would still have been a good deal. I believe you'll make more money with a lower price. I also believe if it's groundbreaking then keeping the price low leads people to value it less, with the end result that the effect makes you money before it is forgotten or lost in the sea of secrets. When is the last time you saw a hobbyist magician perform PK Time? There are many, many copies out there. "What we obtain too cheaply we esteem too lightly." That's good for protecting secrets. I guarantee I could fool someone reading this post with a secret I learned in George Schindler's "Magic With Everyday Objects", a book once sold in bookstores across the nation. Karl Fulves' "Self-Working Mental Magic" is likewise a book that everyone owns but esteems too lightly to bother searching. From a business standpoint, the more people who buy your groundbreaking work, the bigger the pool you'll have to market your next product to. Later you can raise prices. If Banachek were selling a groundbreaking effect printed on one page for $150, I'd probably buy it because I already know the quality of his work from his affordable previous works. Still I'd be surprised if Banachek sold his upcoming book on PK Touches, for example, for more than $75. My current opener was sold to 100 people for $100 each. I purchased the 100th copy two years ago and have been very pleased with the work. It was published by a TV consultant whose name I already knew and the effect was praised by names that most of us admire. I'm skeptical of unfamiliar names who sell their anorexic tomes for $250-$300 when I can get pure gold from Bruce Bernstein or Richard Mark for less than $40. On the recommendation of Café members I've bought expensive books that were wastes of paper, filled with pipe dreams and unworkable garbage. I won't take that risk again. I must know what I'm getting, I must see the effect and be taken by it or at least see how laymen might respond well to it.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.

If I was writing something that I felt met that criteria, I would probably take the time to explain WHY the material was new and and groundbreaking and, since I imagine that I would be proud of such an idea, would also provide a historical context and analysis. Even if the basic idea could be described in a page or less, the manuscript would probably end up being much longer. And since "groundbreaking" implies that the effect involves a new principle, I would also include thematic variations and presentations to illustrate the true value of the idea. In the end, I would probably end up with a decent sized manuscript. If it was a truly groundbreaking and innovative idea I would certainly want to do it justice. And I wouldn't have to worry about people thinking that maybe I just dashed off a one-pager to make a quick buck. ("The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy" sold for around $45 bucks and was 290 pages long. I'm staggered when I think how much I could have made if I had included some original and groundbreaking material - I probably could have broken it up into two hundred or so one-page manuscripts and made a fortune!) Good thoughts, Bob BTW - I have written a joke that is only two lines long. I can't reveal it here, but it is the greatest joke of all time and will positively render any audience helpless with laughter for at least ten to twenty minutes. It's truly devastating. How much would you pay for that? (Or would you just wait until someone inevitably uploaded the joke to YouTube?) |

It would depend on who recommends it. The Café is a wonderful place. You can get burnt once, but then look at the people who recommended the item and take note.........NOT to listen to their reviews again if it was hype and rubbish. This is of couse subject to it being over priced and not just because you make a mistake and it doesn't fit your style. When I look at books and info such as The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy, Mind Myth and Magik, Thirteen steps being only a few of the greats and then compare to some of the $200-$300 books put out this year by some of the new kids on the block, its frightening. Whats more frightening are some of the reviews that glorify these one off routines. I truely believe you should re-read Mastermindreaders post above carefully, its good advice.

I would buy a one-page manuscript for a high price if I thought I would find the information useful enough to justify the price. But since "amazing and ground breaking" by itself doesn't necessarily translate into "personally useful," I would need more information than that to decide.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

If the marginal benefit exceeds the marginal cost, there is no reason why I would not purchase. Doesn't matter if the price is high, low, or in between. Again, if the marginal benefit exceeds the marginal cost, I would purchase...at any price!

I'd only buy it if I felt the effect fit my character. I don't care how awesome and groundbreaking it is if the effect isn't consistent with my character.
