Angio: I agree. Very interesting reading. Concepts, how people turned experimented with concepts into reality. I read it in less than a week. Good for reference. Recommended.

A wonderful book! Jim is a fine writer and historian as well as being a highly creative illusion designer. Also check out his new work on Thurston, which is a delightful and highly informative read.

I knew nothing about magic until I read 'Hiding the Elephant' about 5 years ago, and I bought it by pure chance when I was browsing through a bookshop for something new to read. It opened the door (the trapdoor maybe) to magic for me, and so personally, I couldn't recommend it more.

As I write this, I am the current vice-president of the Fort Worth Magicians Club.
Every year we have our x-mas meeting where we do a Chinese gift exchange. I didn't want to do that this time. So I created a magic game show. I used this book to come up with the trivia questions. like... "What magician used to whisper obscenities to their volunteers to get surprised facial reactions that the audience would assume it's from the magic?" Answer... read the book. |

I was given this as a gift when I was a kid by someone who knew I was into magic. Gave it a go, gave up on it and let it sit on my shelf for years. When I did finally get around to reading it I thought it was great.

This is easily one of the finest books on magic ever, both for laymen as well as magicians. Hiding the Elephant is one of the few magic books I'd recommend to non-magicians.

I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed Steinmeyer's book on Charles Fort - though more about the bizarre than magic.
I'm reading his essays on artifice at the moment - that too is good. I think you'll also enjoy Carter beast the Devil if you like this kind of stuff. |

Carter Beats the Devil is a great read, at one point I heard they were going to make a movie out of it with Tom Cruise, not sure what happened with that project.

Just got around to reading Hiding the elephant. Loved it and read it cover to cover almost non stop. Would recommend this to anyone. If you have 50 post or more you can join a discussion on the books ending secret that I found fascinating.

Got it from my library. Interesting, but nothing memorable, as far as I'm concerned.
