Hi guys,
Just thought it might be useful to us. I am very much an amateur, far far behind Bill, so far away that you need to add a microscope when you are looking for me through a pair of binoculars.... Francis

Earth to Francis,
It was only a clever comment meant to elicit some humorous reactions, from the fine fellows here. Please don't take, me seriously. No one else did. |

I saw some cups while I was in Europe that were very intriguing. Unfortunately, they are not for sale, but they did give me some ideas that I might pass on to our friend in Pennsylvania.

I have just bought a Chop cup from Gareth Gwatkin. Using in a gig tonight will post a review in a few days. All I can say for now is that this cup is beautiful!

I promised a review of Gareth's Large Elegance Chop Cup In Cocobolo wood. I have used the cup now at the past 3 corporate Christmas parties and I can honestly say it is the best chop cup I have ever owned. Let me tell you why.
It looks a million dollars, the colour and grain of the wood is beautiful. This is not an accident either, as a professional Cabinet maker here in England - with some very exclusive clients on his books, Gareth knows who to bring the best out of wood. His wood turning skills and joints are 5 star. I have no idea how he got the mag*** inside this cup. The finish of the cup is as smooth as silk. There is a fantastic weight to the cup, not to light or heavy, just right to give it that quality feel. This will last a life time and then some. Size wise the cup fits my hand perfectly and it is a joy to load. It takes 'fab fruit' easily. The cup comes with a set of hand made balls by Danis and you can adjust the chopped ball to what ever attraction you prefer. I use heavy leather balls and Gareth custom made my cup to fit the balls for a firm hold. This is one of the advantages of working with a skilled craftsman. The whole outfit comes in a beautiful blue lined bag in which you can store your cup and you are even given a small pot of wax to keep your cup looking in showroom condition. Gareth is a gentleman to do business with and his products are just the best. He is fast becoming recognized as one of the worlds best wood workers for magic props and this is a good thing as we can all benefit from better working tools. There are not too many Lassen's ,Riser's ,Gerlitz's (to name but a few) so let's spread the word and help get this young mans work before more magicians and collectors. I can hardly believe that someone manufactured, yet, another chop cup if you can believe that. Wow. http://wellingtonent.com/products/chopcup.html It does sound interesting from what I read in the description. I probably would have ordered one immediately but read that the gimmick was implemented off-set which turned me off completely. To me, that assumes that all performers are going to perform the simplex routine. I hate when manufacturers install "features" in an attempt to improve something that requires no improvement. For what it is worth.

If you are any kind of an entertainer you don't need any expensive, clever, chop cup.
One of the best was Ron Wilson, who worked for years at the Magic Castle. His cup? A paper cup he stuck a magnet into. Matter of fact, he had a metal Don Alan cup and gave it to me as he never used it, preferring the paper coffee cup. Just like my version of the Walnut trick. It started out with a fairly expensive gimmicked glass... and with a bit of time an development wound up with a stronger routine using a plain ungimmicked glass.

Some trains in Spain have a Caféteria that use disposable paper coffee cups. Also they offer complimentary small headphones (like in the planes). I broke the headphones an got two kind of m******c small rings. I fixed one of them with chewing gum between the bottoms of two SMALL coffee cups (removing one of the rolled paper cups rim) and wrapped the other in a paper napking making a small "special paper ball" Went to my seat with my full "cup of coffe" and napking. After drinking the coffee I wipe the cap with the napking rool it in ball and went into an "impromptu" chop cup routine. Since them I use this routine when I feel the circumstances suit it. |

I picked up both the Sherwood Antique Brass Bronze mini combo cups and the Cocktail Bar Cup ensemble last week. Absolutely gorgeous and money extremely well spent. I realize that effective magic does not require fancy expensive props but I sure do love high end apparatus nonetheless. For me it adds a touch of elegance to my performances.
