Has anybody ever run across any sources for doing close-up magic using lit, real, cigars?

Haven't really run across anyone who does cigar magic, however you could probably modify some cigarette moves and apply them to cigars. I'd imagine that they all would work. Hope this helps.

Carney does a routine with dummy cigars in his Book of Secrets. Maybe that would give you ideas.

Yeah, the routine that Carney and a few other guys do is one of my favorites. It uses wooden cigars instead of real ones. John Rogers at http://www.woodencigars.com makes them in "lit" and "unlit" versions. I have both types. I think that you'd be hard pressed to find a finer set of wooden cigars (most routines of the Leipzig-Hunter variety use two cigars). You can find more information in Dai Vernon's Tribute to Leipzig book from L&L Publishing.

It would be very cool to do the Leipzig routine with lit cigars... maybe do something with the smoke like Peter Samulson did too.

Thanks guys, I'll look into the cigarette routines, as well as the Leipzig stuff. Maybe I can work in a switch from a real cigar to one of those wooden ones.

I hear former President Clinton used to do a pretty good cigar trick.

Jack Chanin wrote a whole book on Cigar magic and manipulations. I think it was cleverly titled something like "Cigar Magic".
Most of the information in Kieth Clarks "Cigarette Magic" is applicable to cigars. Also, consider any of the CC Knife material. It is surprising how much of that material is also applicable to manipulation of like-sized objects... The GW Hunter Multiplying Cigars is good, The Liepzig Routine has already been mentioned, and there are many versions of it. Carl Sten had a wonderful method of doing the Multiplying Cigars that appeared in a Genii, either on its own or in a Magicana, I can't recall at this point, but I do have the article. I think there is some material in "The Magic of The Hands" series, by Edward Victor, can anyone confirm my failing memory? I'm sure I'll remember other sources as I think about it, and I'll post them as they occur to me... Best, PSC

Yes Paul, there is a bit about cigar manip in the Edward Victor books, all three. I just looked them up in the E.V. books that I received from you, long ago!

I second the http://www.woodencigars.com reply. John not only makes great wooden cigars, but also has a set of lecture notes with most of his cigar magic in it with clear demonstrations, etc. Great stuff...

John Rogers' wooden cigars are so realistic, it's scary. The lit ones really look lit, closeup.

I'm about to receive the book NOW YOU SEE IT NOW YOU DON'T... it's a book for beginners. but from what I already know about it, it has cigar manipulations
and my friend, from far away who already had the book for a long time says the cigar sleights can be applied for golf pencils |

I may be wrong but, In order to multiply the cigar you would have to touch the 'cherry'.
I also recommend checking out woodencigars.com. If you email him directly he may tell you why you wooden smoke (his joke). I think you might begin to accept that wood is good. (wood with a magnet is better) He believe his own act is better than John Carneys. John Carney is about to go on tour. You may get to talk to him yourself. |

The new issue of Genii, November 2003, contains a cigar effect by Jim Steinmeyer titled "Smoke and Fire". A borrowed signed bill is accidentally burned, but ends up rolled in the middle of the tobacco in the center of a cigar which has been smoked throughout the routine.
Gary Kurtz has a bill in cigar routine titled "Cigar" in his book "Unexplainable Acts". Chris Kenner's "Totally Out of Control" contains the effect "Into the Woods", Chris's version of Nate Leipzig's classic cigars and purse routine. Takeshi Nemoto also has a version of Leipzig's cigar and purse routine in Nemoto's book "Tokyo Trickery". In "Simply Harkey" David Harkey has an effect titled "Havana Gold" in which he slides a cigar band off a cigar and it changes into a borrowed finger ring. Just a note about the above post: Only Steinmeyer's effect actually uses a lit cigar. The rest of the listed routines use unlit cigars. |

Has anybody found a source for the tiny purses John Carney uses in his routine?
I've been checking flea-markets all over without much success. I made up the cigars by myself and they look quite good. I especially like the idea of using a little circle of black sandpaper to get a better grip on the end.

Dr. Rubinstein (the coin expert from New York who is a member on TMC) had some nice purses similar to the ones that Carney uses. I bought a couple of sets from him not too long ago. They are made of quality leather from Italy. He may still have a few sets left. A search should turn up the thread with his contact info.
