Review – Hypnosis Installed 1.0 by Jonathan Chase
Review by Anthony Jacquin Jon Chase Hypnosis Installed I have had a chance to watch this and use the techniques outlined in this long awaited and highly anticipated DVD. Here are my thoughts. First the blurb: “Hypnosis Installed 1.0 is the first digital learning experience to use hypnosis to teach hypnosis. This is an installation process using cutting edge audio and video technology combined with hypnosis techniques. Immerse yourself in this programme and using osmosis you will have the ability to become a hypnotist and to hypnotise others. Simply watch and repeat the installation DVD and become a confident, effective hypnotist. You will see how to hypnotise, what inductions to use, what words to say, what processes to undertake, what actions to perform and what reactions to expect. In addition to the regular installation video you can also listen to the Hypnotists director / producer commentary where Jonathan Chase and Tim Box will talk you through what you are seeing, offering up further insights, information, tips and suggestions.” What do you get? Hypnosis Installed 1.0 is a 3 disc DVD box set including a 36 page booklet. The production values are high, with attention clearly having been paid to delivering a product with a coherent design and a modern edgy feel. The booklet is a stylised memory aid for the techniques on the DVD rather than a full training manual. The important words are included. There is also lots of blank space to write in it and take notes. The footage makes use of multiple camera angles, with much of it delivered split screen '24' style and text overlays of important lines and philosophical statements deemed to be important appear throughout. Disk 1.1 shows five hypnotists, all students of Jon Chase (JC), with varied experience, doing a series of inductions. These clips are interspersed with cuts back to to JC providing insightful commentary about what hypnosis is, how it works and what kind of attitude needs to be adopted to do it well. Three of the inductions are well known, Eye Lock, Magnetic Hands and Arm Bar. You also get Jon's take on The Handshake Induction with an original and useful twist and my personal favourite from the set, the Mantis Induction. On the back of the induction the viewer can then see each hypnotist do some deepening and go into arm levitation, laughter and Symbolism. The JC style wake up is included too. Even if you already have enough inductions in your repertoire, there is some valuable material and some very useful insights provided on this disk. The Eye Lock and other techniques featured include the standard wording of Elman 'pretend and imagine', the crucial difference being that as soon as the eyes are locked it is assumed that you have hypnosis or that it will follow by uttering the word 'sleep'. In other words the eye lock is not just a bypass of, as Elman put it, 'The Critical Faculty' but is in fact the establishing of 'Selective Thinking'. This is something that no one had made clear to me before JC did many years back, so it is nice to see it on video. It looks simple because it is simple. The inductions mostly result in some kind of leverage that the hypnotist can springboard off of. The extra bit JC has added to the handshake induction is essentially a suggestive question that illustrates just how easy it is to get people to commit to seeing things that are not there and uses this as a focal point. Brilliant. All viewers will benefit from seeing a variety of hypnotists with vastly contrasting styles and levels of authority using the same techniques. The techniques do not matter that much. The ritual does. It will prevent the creation of in-congruent JC clones and instead give people choice about the character they bring to being The Hypnotist. You have the room with this approach to be your self. The stage hypnotist featured is utterly clear, direct and authoritative. Always in control. There is much to be learnt by watching his delivery if you plan to do stage hypnosis. His induction is great for stage and a group mantis would be something to marvel at. Others will benefit from the steady and confident delivery of Darren Altman, a more flexible style with dashes of multiple influences, and nice touches, my favourite hypnotist on the set. The hypnotherapist featured has an altogether more gentle approach. Some viewers will perhaps gain confidence from the revelation in the commentary that one of the hypnotists featured on the DVD learnt hypnosis two weeks before the shoot in a 30 minute session with JC! Perhaps she had it installed! The products title and promotional material suggest that Hypnosis can be 'installed', by 'osmosis' no less! This is the disk that is supposed to do that, to install hypnosis. It was not clear to me from the promotional material or upon watching the disk how this was going to happen. However JC explains later on, on the interview disk, that 'Installed' actually means watch and listen repeatedly. Practice being the third crucial element. Do it. This seems like a fairly standard approach to learning and of course advised if you want this stuff to stick. One small complaint is the abrasive beeping noise between chapters on the disk. After dutifully sticking on the headphones as instructed I found this annoying and unnecessary. Disk 1.2 is all about JC's content free approach to doing therapeutic work, known as Symbolism. As a big fan of content free, non-invasive techniques for change and as someone who has rolled out JC's other style of symbolism 'Chinosis' many, many times, I was intrigued to see what this would be about. I was pleased to see any reference to 'Chi', 'energy', 'tapping' and anything else resembling EFT, TFT or Eastern Medicine has been eliminated. What is left is what is referred to on the disk as the 'silver bullet' technique. The participant is asked to rate how bad their problem is or how close to a goal they are on the SUD's (Subjective Units of Distress) scale. How bad is that fear? How close to the goal are you? They are asked to imagine a symbol representing the problem or goal. Then asked to change that into a symbol that represents the outcome they want. There is a little more to it in practice, but nothing that could not be grasped from watching the disk a couple of times. My expectation was that this would be delivered without an induction but JC explains that it is more effective if delivered after an induction. It normally results in the person no longer being able to feel the same way about their problem or their ability to achieve their goal on the standard SUD scale. It is indicative of how simple therapeutic work can be and how such simple requests and suggestions for change can be safely out in the hands of anyone. No content is required, no history and no analysis. You can just change your mind, seems to be the suggestion. My advice is play with it. Throw it into your life as well as your therapy work immediately and see what happens. I suspect people will change the way they think, feel and respond. Disk 1.3 is a candid interview with JC. Every question asked is relevant and every answer insightful in some way. Tim Box essentially asks most of the questions I would like to ask JC, indeed, ask any hypnotist. The atmosphere is relaxed and open. This is the most valuable disk if you want to understand more about Jon's personal technique and understanding of hypnosis. Overall I think this is a valuable addition to the library of any hypnotist. I also think it is a useful extension of the material JC is best known for regarding stage hypnosis. It is characteristically simple, free from filler and has some fresh ideas. The cost is £89.00. It is available from http://www.hypnosisinstalled.tv/shop/ Any questions based on my review let me know.

The "Installed" marketing is what would put me off this product. I read the blurb and said no. Perhaps that is unfair, as Jon's book is good. But "installed" implies some revolutionary new learning technology. Watch repeatedly and absorb is not new.

Just got an email from Tim Box that Hypnosis Installed will grow. Parts 1.4 to 1.9 will be free audio chapters where you can get more Hypnosophy from JC!

Tony many thanks on your kind words for the book. Which book is that? There are four currently, with a couple being changed from e-books to the paper kind, and several Kindle handbooks. May I address your concern?
"Installed" just means - to place in position. I think Tony that any good presentation installs. As for teaching in the literal sense it isn't. It's demonstration and explination done in such a way as to engage the subconscious to the point where the placing in position has no need of cognitive or conscious effort. That is by Osmosis - "gradual or unconscious assimilation or adoption, as of ideas." Hence being told to repeat it's watching. It may use new and very modern technology, but the principal is as ancient as humans. Many thanks for the review Ant, we'll be discussing the annoying stuff on the first update. Jon Chase |

Do any of you guys (Anthony / Jonathan / Reg etc) have any plans to sell your products through apples online store?
Whilst I like the idea of having the physical books / DVD´s / CD´s sitting on my shelf, I´ve had the odd problem with the physical items (a DVD I purchased has something wrong with it and I can´t watch it in its entirety) - I´m now coming around to the idea of things like Apples online store which remembers your purchases, so if your ipad comes a cropper you can always re-download what you paid for.
If you never fail, you're not trying hard enough.

It's a little after 12.30.a.m. and I'm in a hotel having just finished a wee gig here in Bournemouth. My room has a fridge, full of small bottles of alcohol!!!
I'm a wee bit lonely but happy. Let's call this post 'stories from the road'. When I finish up around the end of this month I'll probably send Jon Chase some money to support him in his old age. I might even buy his DVD But I thought Ant's review was good, and I do actually like the idea of 'installation' and 'osmosis'. Some might think it's good marketing and it probably is, however 'installation' was one of the key words in the art world at this year's Edinburgh Fringe and I've always believed the best things in life can be acquired through 'osmosis'. So yes, well done Mr Chase, I like it even beforte I've bought it. Now then, let's have a pop at that stuff in the fridge. Got my acoustic guitar with me by the way. The folks in the next room will be in heaven in about 2 minutes from now. Well, y'gotta' be positive in this game eh?
