Would anyone who has bought the new Magic Page by Page Book by the late Patrick Page like to put a review of it on the Magic Café? For those of you who do not have a copy it is available exclusively from http://www.patrickpagemagic.co.uk and selling in great numbers.
Everyone who has received the book so far has told us how pleased they are with it. We are shipping the next business day. Philip Pound (Pat's son in law) |

I'm sure this is a great book, but I was shocked at the price of shipping to the US, almost $50. 30 pounds or two thirds of the price of the book.

I'm sure it is, but there's no way shipping should cost that much.

Hi motown, welcome to the club! I order lots of books from the US and it's very expensive. For instance go to steve beam site and order its heavy Trapdoor V1 and pretend you're based in the UK. It'll cost you 48USD,ie 30GBP.

I guess that's the problem when you can only buy the item from a single source.

It's a very large and heavy book.
Shipping between the UK and US *is* expensive. I very rarely buy anything from the US for that reason - which is unfortunate because most magic stuff originates there and we usually get charged an exchange rate of $1=£1 if we buy from UK dealers. Barry |

I've shipped heavy books to Europe before and it never cost that much. As I said, it's unfortunate when an item is only available from a single source and the consumer has to pay such high amount for shipping.

I wonder if the UK has a Flat Rate like the US. For example my book, The Book of Destiny is exactly the same size and weight and even the same number of pages (368) as the Pat Page book. I ship to Europe and most of the world for $17 in a flat rate legal size Priority Mail envelope provided by the USPS. My exact cost is $16.95 if I do it online and a little more at the PO. With a priority carton the cost is about $48 and I can ship 3-6 books in that depending on the title's size.

I am sorry but the UK customers buying from the U.S. are making out like bandits. U.S. customers have to pay $1.59 to $1.75 or more for each British Pound.
So U.K. customers buy from the U.S. they are getting products already at a huge discount. currently 1 British pound equals 63 cents U.S. So U.K. is getting over 35% discount on all purchases, then they want to complain about postage. From the savings they make on a purchase, paying for International mail is cheap from them as they do not even pay the actual dollar amount, after an exchange. I really think all dealers should have a price for U.S. and a higher price equal to the exchange rate for U.K. customers. They maybe will understand how good they got it by buying from the U.S., but I think they all know what a deal they are getting. The book would cost 100 pounds which today would be $159.00 plus the exchange rate transaction costs. Really!! |

We're also paying the VAT, which is very high and built into the price. If they took that off it would help, since we're not part of the EU.

@Bill Hegbli - In fact, when you add the cost of shipping onto the price of magic items from the US it comes out at basically the same, if not slightly more than it would to buy it in the UK. I've looked into this a few times and despite the actual books being cheaper due to exchange rates, the shipping cancels out all savings.
As to us "making out like bandits" and complaining about postage - I think the OP was actually complaining about the cost of shipping from the UK to the US. And as to having a different price for UK customers, just due to exchange rates - well... Anyway - I own the Patrick Page book, and I can confirm that it is very good. Worth the high shipping? Well, that's up to the individual. |

Not only that but there is rather a glaring error in the numbers...
