I preferred the NWA/WCW on the Superstation out of Atlanta. The Four Horsemen were the best bad guys: Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, and Ole and Arn Anderson (Ole was later replaced by Lex Luger). The Road Warriors were my favorite tag team. But my very favorite, just because of his character and charisma? That would have to be The American Dream, Dusty Rhodes! Yeah, he was fat and his forehead was all scarred up, and he had that "thing" on his rib cage. But Dusty was very funny, he could out-talk anybody, and for a guy who looked like someone's chubby drunk grandpa, he moved incredibly well! A lot of people aren't aware that he did most of the story lines for the NWA/WCW, which I personally felt were vastly superior to the WWF.

I think one of the worst things to happen to pro wrestling was when it went from regional promotions to national. The weekly local live events dried up and became a thing of the past. Now you are lucky if you get a live event more than once a year...if that.

The phenomenal financial success of WWE hasn't been good for professional wrestling - it's just so commercial and tacky in the wrong way now.
I turned it on one day and saw Hornswoggle in drag fighting the divas. The commentators for some reason were calling him Snooki. |

Interesting - just googled The Ultimate Warrior - they've really managed to erase the evidence of why he left at the peak of his career - not a mention of it anywhere - I think it was fairly common knowledge at the time - the only thing I could find was a hint by an ex-wife of Hogan.

I don't follow it much these days, I personally think Vince and the WWE ruined it. These days they don't wrestle much and they all look pretty much the same.
For the old days I'd say Ric Flair in his WCW days. When I was a kid I'd go to the Wrestling matches every Friday night at the fairgrounds. I was able to see a lot of guys start out in the Northwest. Roddy Piper, Jerry Lawler, Jesse Ventura, Jimi Snuka, Kurt Henning.. My favorites were guys like Dutch Savage, Stan " The Crusher " Stasiak, Lonny Mayne, Johnny Boyd, Bull Ramoes, and Billy Jack Haynes. A few years back we were doing a show on the coast. Up front was a kid that you could tell had a few problems.I took a chance and had him come up and help with a trick. At the end of the show up comes this huge guy, along with the kid. This guy must of been around 6'5" or so and maybe 300 pounds, but in good shape. He wanted to thank me for having his son come up to help. After talking with him for a while he mentions he's a retired wrestler. He was a masked wrestler and through the years he had several names, Dr. X, Mr. USA, as well as The Masked Avenger, another one of my favorites from my younger days. Bob. |

Hey Scott, You bet. He was a great heel around these parts. If I remember right, he passed away a few years back.I remember him teaming up with Ed Wiskowski, who later changed his name over to Col. DeBeers.

I was never a wrestling fan, so it would have to be on the basis of their movie roles. Honorable mentions to Hulk Hogan (Rocky 3) and Andre the Giant (The Princess Bride), but I have to vote for Rowdy Roddy Piper. The fight scene with Keith David in They Live is just too classic.

When I was a kid I was a huge wrestling fan. My favorites had been Rocky Johnson, Pat Patterson, Peter Mavia. Hated the likes of Dr.Ken Ramey and his Masked Interns. Kurt, and Karl Von, Brauner, Moon Dog Mayne.
I've performed magic for several Pro Wrestlers over the years. I have even taught a few effects to a friend of mine who was Dr.Jerry Graham Jr. I've always thought Hulk Hogan was very over rated and really not that good of a wrestler. Ric Flair regardless of if you liked him or not was always better than Hogan. |
