I think people now see Derren Brown as a magician rather than a mind reader. His latest stunts, such as predicting the lottery, are not those of a psychological illusionist. This is why people begin to suspect things more.
However I am not worried. The competition is generally very poor (ask yourself... how often do you meet a GOOD mentalist?) and unbelievable in terms of persuasion of psychic ability and the like. If you keep the tricks good enough, and the presentation smooth enough, with a good backstory and no plot holes, then I think a mentalist can still have a great time. You have to imagine it from the laymen's point of view; think of how clean a 5 card ESP test can be, we have developed to a point in magic/mentalism where what we do can look exactly like the real thing! Tom xx
I call myself "Thomas Cooper" here because this stops the magic café appearing when people google my stage name.
Does anyone else find the term "Special User" to be a bit condescending? |

Thomas Cooper, where have you been?
The art is not dying because of goof wannabees. Entertainment will survive. Its a different era with modern technology granted, ways to get around anything. Look at a good cold reader. You can surely learn it on he internet but that does not make one a good reader. Mix up your weapons and let mentalists quit the business. Bring on the era of the "thought manipulators" then.

Of course I declined and wished her good luck finding anyone to do it. I'm pretty sure whoever this is got contacted most likely first. If you work for high end clients, you should not really be concerned with this. They are pretty much not searching the internet for anything but market and sales fluctuations.

Mindpunisher, what's wrong with a bit of competition? If you are a good hypnotist then other hypnotists will only make your own talents stand out more. I understand what you're saying but running into 5 hypnotists on a night out sounds like a good thing to me, 5 people who appreciate the craft. Why not embrace the fact that you have found like-minded people rather than fight against it? Why were these people "hynotists" - your use of quotation marks implies inferiority...

Return to the art Sir! You know you want to. We talked about this on the Sleepy thread many moons ago. Phineas Taylor Barnum allegedly said "Theres a sucker born every minute." I say there is a Financial First Responder born every minute. The world is still urning for mystery. Television and video games are not fixing that deficiency. Seeing 15 people on stage asleep at your command you gotta be missing. Decomposing into Slumber

And the production value of the show is total cheese. It looks like a bad episode of Star Trek.
Why would promote this on his professional site? It doesn't make sense |

PS: Incidently, a headliner mentalist in Vegas is responsible for at least part of the creation of that series. He is the son of a police detective. Decomp PS: I say bah humbug to that unmasked mentalist selling out to the art who left him infamous.

Really glad when you and your mate came to see my show Brian, he stood and rave to me after it about how much he enjoyed it... Phewwww!
As for selling products on Facebook, I am one of those 'idiots'. With 2000+ followers, most of whom know my work and are interested in it, I'd be more of an idiot not to capitalise on that. When I go out and speak for companies most of them introduce me stating I've published a number of books in the subject. When people ask me if they can buy them to learn my skills, I tell them honesty that no, they will not be able to. Aside from my DVDs, I sell everything myself, so I can monitor who is buying it. And most of the time, if people can't learn it for under a tenner an in less than five minutes, they're not interested. As for this bar situation. Brian, you are aware you were part of a 'hypnotist's Christmas night out', you were wearing a name badge to prove this fact. The other party who came in was my stag party. There was only myself, Kennedy and Mark Elsdon present, so you've 'slightly' Embellished the facts there. So yes, if you arrange to meet with other magicians, hypnotist's, mentalists... Then you will! Duh!! The way I look at it, there are two ways to feel like you're a great performer. One way is to Put all your efforts into putting other people down and focusing on their negatives. The other is to put that effort into improving yourself. There are some incredibly bitter people doing what we do who haven't aspired to anything or are living off memories of their previous slight successes an when they see others doing well (especially younger people is what I'm gathering here?), it makes them angry. In my opinion, if you're going to sit at home and be angry then you're NEVER going to make anything of yourself. As for age, is that an issue? Hell no!! In my opinion, the most creative mentalist alive is Luke Jermay. What's even better is that he's a phenomenal performer. Am I perfect at what I do? God no!! The day I am is the day there is nothing else in this for me. So am I the best at this stuff? Nope. But am I aiming to be? Yup! I'm constantly learning and improving. And long may that continue. But I must bebdping something right. I am very lucky that I now get flown all over the world to perform an speak for global organisations. Do they think I can really read minds? I think if anyone really believed any of us, the government would jump all over us and we'd be whisked away to a cell somewhere. Do they think it's tricks? I also don't think so, I'd they did, then it's of no value to them. What I do know, is that they think I'm entertaining. I've learned to accept that whether they believe what I'm doing is real or not, I'd they are laughing and engaged during the show, then they love it just as much! That said, standing there and blatantly telling people how it's done is a no no and does ruin the magic!! So let's all learn to play nice. RESPECT each other and start helping each other improve. It's time to drop all this ego **** and actually move this wonderful genre forward rather than sitting still, or worse, moving backwards. Happy Christmas everyone and have an amazing new year!! Col Ps: sorry for any typos. This was sent with one hand from my phone as I sit in 'yo sushi' stuffing my face.

Well ferrismagic, here's the bare truth, if you can take it...
You can't EXPOSE Mentalism. (They who believe will believe regardless and put any exposure down as "the way Magicians might do it" but Geller or so and so does it for "real"...) Mentalism will survive so long and as long as people still believe in the supernatural (Psychics, Ghosts, Chi, Auras, Astral Projection, Voodoo and religion in general). Which looks like forever. Yes. Really.
