There is another thread asking for info. on body reading, so I thought this would be a good time to ask for people's recommendations on intuition.
I feel pretty solid on understanding intuition from an esoteric point of view (although I'm happy for any recommendations), but I'm looking for books (or anything) on solid scientific and/or psychological understandings of what intuition is and how it works. Any recommendations? Thanks

Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink" has some very good material on intuition.

Intuitive Practitioner: On the Value of Not Always Knowing What One Is Doing is good because its about actual commonplace jobs (mainly teaching) rather than the few cherry-picked examples that other books tend to use.
Hare Brain Tortoise Min : Why Intelligence Increases When You Think Less is also good.

Hey seadog93,
Here are three links to some interesting psychological articles on the subject: 2008: http://nif-dev-web.nbirn.net/about/publi......tion.pdf 2009: http://www.psychologicalscience.org/jour......gman.pdf 2011 (Note, this article is publicly available, so will require access via a subscribed establishment (i.e., university) or via payment from the journal's publisher at $11.95). http://psycnet.apa.org/index.cfm?fa=buy.......5174-001 I found them very insightful and thought-provoking. Hope they help Ross :) |

Yay, thanks.
I have a follow up question, since everyone was so helpful, What would it take, to be a legit expert on intuition? Not that I necessarily want to take it that far, but on the other hand I might. Being particularly intuitive would be a plus of course. PhD.? PsyD? Would those be necessary, useful or incidental?

Genuine intuition is not a learned skill in my humble opinion. We all have the capacity within us but the messages are often blocked by our conscious mind. What can be learnt is how to remove the barriers we place in front of our minds eye.....

You might want to give the field of Consciousness Studies a look if you are thinking about getting some sort of qualifications. But really, if you present yourself as an expert and are fairly knowledgeable (you can talk confidently about it and answer questions) then there is probably no need to do anything more for an audience or clients.

I´d also recommend "The invisible gorilla". It questions the idea of intuition in good ways.

So, intuition being a natural talent (that everyone has and which can be augmented/improved with practice), do most of you (all of you, any of you) agree that an expert is someone who is knowledgeable on the subject and can demonstrate it to a high degree?
Perhaps has written a book? Do you think an individual (ie. ...me) would be considered more of an expert on the subject if they were not only very intuitive from a young age, but sought out letters and training in related fields to understand the gift (gift/curse/fill-in-the-blank)? Most of the books that are supposed to teach you how to be more intuitive are written by people who have no academic expertise, but are very intuitive and wrote a book on it. These people are then established experts it seems,. Relatedly, I just got Richard Osterlind's book on developing ESP in the mail. So far it's really good.

We forget that underneath it all, we are animals... beasts with brains, and that we still have inside of us certain animalistic urges/behaviours/feelings... some are good, some are bad...
so they are almost a shadow-self in some ways, and in some people, they can ignore that side of themselves too much, and in conjuction with upbringing and other influences, as well as chemical inbalances in the brain - can suddenly go postal, and the trigger be a minor thing... and then also we can have the flipside, of people doing astounding feats far beyond what we consider to be human or normal... a worried mother lifting a car off their trapped child, the fight or flight side of things... intuition is part of that, some label as gut-instinct, others "insight"... a hunch, a nose for a story...whatever else... but its the part of us that can deal with millions of pieces of information at once, and almost instantly see it all as one entire thing and BANG! we get this urge to go somewhere, do something, believe one person over the other - and myriad of other things that we can't quite explain, yet we feel comfortable in trusting those decisions... it is often remarked that before a tsunami or similar, all animals flee the area (or at least a high percentage do) - they 'sense' something...and it leaps from one animal to the next, all interconnecting, all picking up on signals from each and every other "thing" to eventually turn it into "RUN!" that's how I see it...
