Well, the average high school graduation rate is under 70%, if I remember correctly and Waiting for Superman paints a pretty bleak picture of the future too. My father often tells me that a college degree is to my generation what a high school diploma was for his. It looks like we may be going back to that now.
But the real question here is who do we blame, the Democrats or the Republicans? (Note: I'm being sardonic there.) |

What's new... This is the wacky new modern way.
May be there will be a law on the books someday for the white minority groups that will soon be jobless because the laws now on the books benefit everyone else but them.

I cynically doubt that such a law would come onto the books. The comparable laws are there now to balance out a (perceived) inequality in our society.
If the balance of power, for the lack of a better term, switches and those who are now in the minority become the majority, both in society and political office, I'm disinclined to believe that any laws would be put into effect to balance things, such as we have now. Hopefully it will be because we will have evolved beyond the need for such things by then but, again, I cynically doubt that will be the case. |

"Waiting for Superman" completely missed the boat. Yes education is in trouble in this country. That is a fact. But what is totally wrong is the way that film blames the problme on teachers and teacher's unions. Are there burned out teachers? of course there are. Are there incompetent teachers? Sure. Most teachers are hard working and caring people who are invested in making the world better.
You want education to be better? Educate parents! Period. When the parents value education, and are willing to SHOW (not tell) children that education is important, then students will start improving. And get rid of all those stupid tests that Pres. Bush brought it. He couldn't pass one himself, why should our kids have to. Waiting for Superman is propaganda plain and simple, and one person's flawed point of view.

EEOC is informing employers that disabled individuals cannot be excluded from consideration for employment based upon artificial barriers in the form of inflexible qualification standards,” she wrote in a blog post. inflexible as in previously qualified (to do or learn how to) do the work? Guess we're real close to having moral and cognitive disabilities recognized too. Should we really cater to such when it leads to hiring those who are unable/unfit for their work?

I've been passed over for jobs because I am a college graduate, and have been told such. I guess it's just a matter of time that high school graduates will be passed over for jobs, since those who didn't graduate are just as qualified.

Seems like it's a non-issue given that, "“While an employer is not required to ‘prefer’ a learning-disabled applicant over other applicants with more extensive qualifications, ..."

Yes, it would seem like it's a non-issue, but look at the controversy surrounding affirmative action. It's there to prevent non-discrimination, all this is doing is redefining a protected class.

In California, there are frequent protests that admissions directors are not allowed to let people in and keep people out of public universities based on their race. I'm not sure the law will survive. At at least one top university, the biggest group that would suffer if it were repealed is not Caucasians, but Asian-Americans.

I'm not sure what the big deal is here. Reading the article, it is clear that it is not talking about a new law or any changes in ADA. Instead it is referring to an "informal discussion letter" from the EEOC that simply suggest employers not create artificial barriers to employment - i.e., where a high school diploma, for example, is not necessary for the performance of a given job, having one should not be an inflexible requirement.

That is certainly possible, Lobo, but, as I said, we're not talking about a law here. It's just an informal "discussion letter". And if they're discussing it, I guess it might be appropriate to ask if a high school diploma should be a necessary requirement for jobs that are the business world's equivalents of fruit picking, dishwashing etc.
Also note that the article states that applicants would still have to be qualified and able to do the jobs they are applying for. Good thoughts, Bob |

I haven't read the article, but...
If a high school education is not necessary to do the job, why should it be required to get the job (eg. the dishwashers Bob mentions)? Also, a high school diploma doesn't mean you have any kind of education at all so who cares. I don't have a high school diploma per se; I have an certificate that takes it place. I received this after taking an equivalency test that I could have passed when I was in 6th grade; I think many have high school diplomas who wouldn't be able to pass this test.

Today's informal discussion letter is tomorrow's federal lawsuit. Cherry picking and dishwashing are easy enough (although a high school dloma may be a proxy even for things that may be important to Jose jobs, like commitment to attendance, or willingness to do busywork), but forget menial labor...what jobs *are* there where a high school education is "necessary"? Nary a one, I suspect.
