I never realized Joe Porper made a dye tube until recently. Or maybe I did at some point and just forgot about it. Anyway, I ran across a picture of one and noticed the unique design. Judging from a photo, it appears to be made like a simplex with a larger mid-section. Can someone tell me some specifics about it. I would like to know if each side is a different diameter, and how much silk it will hold. Any information will be appreciated, but those are the main 2 issues I need to find out about.
Thanks! Regan

Hi, Regan. I have one somewhere and was trying to remember since I haven't used it in a while. I came across this description at Elmwood Magic, "This Dye Tube works easily with any silk up to 18 inches. The center of the tube is expanded so it holds even more than normal tubes and fits comfortably in the closed hand. The tube measures about 2 inches long and has a 3/4 inch opening at each end. It is made of a heavy gauge, but light weight aluminum." If memory serves me I was able to load a 24-inch diamond cut silk with no problem.

I believe it is only a Palmo Ball with lips. It looks like the same design as the Vernet plastic Dye Tube.

Regan,
I don't have mine in front of me, but as I remember it, the openings are of the same diameter. Damian |

It is about the same size as vernets. But a lot heavier. Made to last a lifetime.

Thanks everyone! I think I am going to pick one up soon. I mainly use a Simplex and a Palmo, but occasionally I use various other dye tubes. I am always looking for something better. I was hoping it had at least an 18" silk load capacity, so that's good. I kind of wish it had different sized openings, but hopefully it will work for me. I guess I need to measure my Simplex and determine what size I actually like.
Thanks again! Regan My Simplex measures 5/8" diameter on one side and 11/16" diameter on the other. These are inside diameter measurements. I have slender fingers so I prefer the smaller side. I was hoping the Porper Dye Tube would have 2 different sizes so maybe one would fit. The way I use my Simplex requires a tight fit so I am a little concerned that the 3/4" may be slightly too large for me. I am hoping the specs listed are the outside diameter measurements. From a picture I saw it seems as though the Porper has rolled edges, and a pretty thick wall at the ends, so if it is 3/4" O.D. it may work better for me. If it an I.D. measurement...well, I guess I'll find out when I get it.

I received the Porper Dye Tube today. It is a little too large, so I am going to have to do a little work in order for it to fit me properly. It is made well, but I am really disappointed in some rough spots left on the metal. There are several on the inside, and one on the edge of the "lip" of the opening. I assume they are tool marks left behind during the manufacturing process. Any of these spots could potentially be very rough on silk. I am not even going to attempt to use it with a good silk until I smooth these rough burrs. The ones on the inside are going to be difficult to reach, but I will have to sand them smooth before I can use this thing. The one on the outside will be easier to repair, but sanding in this area will take the paint off. I will have to find some flesh-colored paint and touch it up, and/or band aids may cover up the problem.
I have to say, I am really surprised that a Porper product would be sold in this condition. I've heard raves about the quality of his products. I was expecting better workmanship on such a costly dye tube. It could have been taken care of very easily during the manufacturing, so it is hard for me to understand why it wasn't. I hope this is not common, and that maybe this one that I got just unknowingly slipped though Joe's QC department. By the way, if anyone has any tips on how to best lessen the diameter of the holes I would love to hear them. I am going to get some of the cloth-covered band aids and try that first. If they work out I can cover the end with the flaw and that should take care of that. Even if I sand down the burr and ruin the paint in that area the band aids should cover it. Thanks!
