Hey Café Members,
Heres a good one, Which illusions do you think get the best reactions? Not sure if this questions has it own thread yet…… |

I think Illusions that result in the vanish of an assistant/magician, followed by a reappearance in the back of the theater, generate a favorable response. i.e. Asrah Levitation, Mark Kalin's Spiker, Copperfield's Fan Illusion, Cane Cabinet, etc.

This is a question that can not be fairly answered in my opinion!
I have seen the sub trunk performed to an audience and the jaws hit the floor and I have seen it where it fell really flat. I have seen many of the same illusions performed by different performers some get great reactions and some do not. its the touch of the masters hand! what is the other saying magic is 10% magic and 90% presentation. that being said from my personal experience twister is one of the best audience reaction illusions! it never fails to get an audible gasp and a really good shock when yo make the reveal. the sub trunk also gets incredible reactions all the time. matter of fact it is the most talked about after my shows. I also think things like instant babe and dekalta chair are good at getting reactions. the point I think besides a great presentation is an illusion that can give the WOW factor. sword basket is a filler trick but sub trunk is a wow trick-- make sense. so I don't think there is a definitive answer to the question but you will get many opinions. sam

The illusions don't get a reaction - the performer gets a reaction. As Sam said, a "good" effect by a mediocre performer can fall flat, and a "mediocre" effect by a top-notch performer can bring down the house. Victor Borge could have the audience in tears by doing nothing more than playing Chopsticks.
That's our departed buddy Burt, aka The Great Burtini, doing his famous Cups and Mice routine

It definately depends on the routine and the performer. It also depends on what type of reaction you are going for... I get an incredible comedy reaction from my sword basket. Also Tracy's Vanish into it gets a reaction as well so I certainly wouldn't consider it a filler for me but for many people it would be I guess. I was told by two different people on a recent tour that my new Origami routine moved them to tears... An amazing compliment considering I had given up on the Origami last year and sold mine because I felt it was my weakest routine. I obviously bought another one when I had the idea for my currnet routine. It all depends upon your ability to attach EMOTION to your routine, whether it's comedy, romance or mystery.
Just my random thoughts... Mad Jack |

Two illusions which I have seen, and seem to pull great reactions of the emotional kind from the audience are Copperfield's "Flying" and his "Snowstorm" routine. The look of amazement and wonder was not just confined to my 3 children who were with me (and they have seen a bit of magic...LOL) but when I looked around seemingly the entire audience felt the same way! (Both of these were seen in a theatre setting, when I saw them in the arena version they did not "pull" as well.)

As many before have mentioned, there really is no one "perfect" illusion, only perfectly "performed" illusions. Having said that, the best bang for the buck has got to be metamorphosis. Fully assemebled, it can pack in a passenger van. It needs no special lighting and can be performed in the round (top version). Audience members can be 5 feet away or 500 feet away. Ilusions will come and go, but 100 plus years after it was first performed, metamorphosis still has audiences in awe. That, combined with its versatility give it my vote.

I've seen lots of illusion stuff on Youtube... my first reaction is generally to vomit... but thank god for the "back" button...
Probably not the reaction you had in mind.... Kevin Robert and others are right.. can't really go wrong with a well done sub trunk.. but what's the deal all of a sudden with all these "substitution" boxes that aren't trunks. One of the main points of the illusion is to take an object everyone has seen and is familiar with... and make the switch fast. Building a pyramid or a clear thing or even using a cage is kind of undoing the whole point... Even the Pendragon's circus themed trunk was stretching the point for me. To make it anything more than a trunk is to make the effect weaker. I'm off my soap box now. ... Carry on. |

Sub Trunk without a doubt, if you sum up all the pro's and cons than you'll have your answer..
But offcourse, presentation is 90% of an illusion.. |
