Ekuth,
Don't worry about Jamie Ferguson, he follows me around trying to wind me up. I have four children and they are all smarter then he is, so good luck Jamie! You should see his post in Best of 2011. He posted he likes a chop cup from 2009. Anyway, Ekuth, I'm with you my friend! James Quote: On 2012-01-14 23:41, Ekuth wrote:

I don't know if it's a gimmick but sponge balls are a lot of fun.
The TT is a must have! Loops maybe. The extractor is a really powerful gimmick but not to easy to use! Before buying the extractor you need 'Card college' or a similar book. In my opinion. A credit card prepared for a f***e A peek device like Psypher or a wallet. The ID, excellent to have a sure out if something with cards goes wrong. A double backed card and double faced card A mo envelope A coin shell Flipper coin Scotch soda Pk ring That's my list, hope it's helpful and that this aren't to many gimmick. |

I just love gimmicks, they allow you do perform real magic, instead of doing it the hard way and not be as magical. Always use a gimmick for everything if you are a real magician.
From a ball shell to the gung gimmick or pull, now that is real magic. |

Speaking of gimmicks--I always liked the attached photo of various gimmicks from Ottokar Fischer's _Illustrated Magic_. I don't know what 90% of them are used for, and probably 95% of them are _not_ must have gimmicks; but it's an intriguing collection of secret paraphernalia.
I remember a John Davidson TV show with Martin Lewis and Harry Anderson as guests. Martin did some great close-up magic, and then Harry came out to demonstrate a secret card holdout device that delivers cards from the coat sleeve into the hand. It was a hilarious bit because the hookup of the holdout went from an armband on the upper right sleeve down the inside of the coat into the waist of the pants and down the pants leg to a hookup between the knees. Spreading the knees activated the holdout. Also, I remember a magic lecturer who asked at the beginning of the lecture for someone to explain the difference between a "gimmick" and a "fake." Of course, I knew the difference, and I got a free set of lecture notes for being able to answer the question. (That would be a great question for the next "Rice Bowl" competition that our IBM ring holds: For 10 points--What is the difference between a gimmick and a fake?) ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez Click here to view attached image.

One of my favorite gimmicks is a P&L type of reel. You can use it for a ton of tricks. When I was a kid you could get them from Kirkendall for about $15 and they worked great and I still use them in my act!
From what I understand, today the cheaper reel are very badly made and the decent ones are very expensive.
