TV has taught us that being "less than honest" pays dividends and now CellPhones and the Internet provides a vehicle for every person to be as deceptive and contrived as they like -- each person being an actor in their own soap opera. Is there any wonder that folks approach a conjuror or mentalist with any attitude other than "I know you will lie and cheat and steal from me?" Since that is what THEY do in real life, they project that onto others. Youth of today have no confidence over what the future will bring (faith in institutions, jobs, government, money, etc), so "give it to me now and for nothing" is to be expected. Everything is cheap -- even life. That is to say, "It no longer has value." Magicians of all peformance approaches can have theie impact though -- since we all deal with integrity. We promise to give a demonstration of conquering the impossible -- and then do exactly what we say." Please look at this de-evolution of culture as an opportunity to provide a sense of value in other people's lives -- even hope. Remember Billy Joel? "I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary." If you cannot raise the bar, at least when it is lying in the mud, step over it with dignity and pride.
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst
