I am 100% serious about this. Has anyone performed with beavers? I am currently looking for breeders of beavers in Canada.

Good one Michael. I am asking as the beaver is one of the national animals of Canada. I am obviously not going to bring a Moose into a school. From the limited amount of information I have found they make good pets.

What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I agree with Bob. You better make all your production boxes out of metal! If you use wood you may get an "Automatic Beaver Production"!
That might sound good in a magic ad, but they probably won't tell you that the production would most likely happen prematurely, and the prop would only be good for one show, after which time it would need to be repaired or possibly even replaced! :) Regan

They are animals that you would keep caged when not around them and you supply with lots of wood. I have found a source for raccoons but no beavers.
Yes the productions would be made of metal much like a parrot production. |

Hey Ryan,
Just being curious, but is it legal to own a beaver as a pet where you are? Then, is there any special paperwork required to own it? And finally, can you get insurance as a performer using a beaver? I can certainly see the benefit of selling a show to schools and other groups using the beaver as a conversational and educational piece. Good luck! |

I am sure there is a way of getting all the proper paper work. You may need to be licensed as a zoo. That means just a bit more insurance and checks from the authorities. I want to find a breeder first to see if I can even get one.
I am also thinking about getting a Fennec Fox, they aren't from Canada but there is a breeder in Ontario. These are tiny foxes that are extremely cute. |

How about getting a custom Spring animal made as a beaver, Not exactly what you are looking for but I think it can work

If I can't find a breeder or it's not permitted I may end with an axtell style beaver puppet. In a perfect world I would end up with a live one though.

Any animal that is Indigenous to your state would acquire an USDA permit for sure. , but once you find a breeder, they will fill you in on all that. your insurance will be high. Not like any million dollar policy, your IBM insurance would definately not cover it. A critter with Teeth...... Mostly dove may be insured, but they fringe on the Rabbit and others. Not trying to discourage you at all, just getting you prepped.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but why would he need a USDA permit if he lives in Canada?

Then It would be a different group but still the same principle. my bad did not know he is from Canada AAAAY. especially if indiginous it will still apply, just another organization. . Just getting him phsyched up for the paperwork. not being negative... It is not expensive, just keeping up with the criteria for housing and care. We went hgru it with Raccoons before, Now we just have to deal with the paperwork for leopards, and even the Rabbit because he is is the public.

Insurance has got to be a hassle to get for beavers and foxes in shows. I live in Ontario Canada and it was insane trying to find insurance that would allow us to use our doves and rabbits in our shows. We cannot get the IBM coverage here and any other group coverage I looked at did not provide insurance if we used live animals.
I finally got a company to write me a business policy and the premium is $1000.00 a year whether we do 1 show or 1000 (I wish!) shows. Also, it clearly states that only my wife and I can actually touch any of the animals used and only doves and rabbits (forget about petting the bunny kids) may be used. We also are forbidden to use any type of fire, small or large, in our act. I would love to know where some of my fellow Canadian performers who use animals, flash paper, and so on got their insurance from and if there is some money to be saved. I think I will ask this question over in the Canadian section. |

RJE, was curious about your additional insured certificates. Here is US of A our fairs and festivals want to be listed as additional insured on the policy. Our old policy coverage it cost us a $50 dollar bill extra for this. Do your Canadian festivals require these??. Beavers are awesome man. Ryan, I sure hope you get it worked out.

I am currently insured with the local clown alley, I am planning on meeting with the insurance company soon to verify that I am covered for everything I do. I would hate to think I am then turn to it and not be covered.
I am still looking for a breeder. If I can find a breeder then I will jump through any hoops the government needs me to. I think it would be an amazing selling point and just a cool animal to add to my family. Any one have any ideas for finding breeders? An hour last night searching google turned up nothing. |

Chris,
The fairs and festivals here often don't even ask if you have insurance. Honestly, I think I have been asked to show proof of insurance less than a dozen times in the past 10 years or so. When I have been asked, they only want to know that we carry appropriate liability insurance and we have never been asked to have a client added as an additional insured. Ryan, I am not 100% sure and would love to be proven wrong, but I do not believe they cover you if you use a live animal of any kind. Again, if that is incorrect and they will give me coverage for 1/4 of what I'm paying now, I would consider very seriously switching over. For insurance for your beaver and fox show, I really think you may have to get special coverage similar to a zoo that takes it animals off site for shows. It certainly can be done and I hope it works out for you. |

You could always strap a ping pong paddle onto a rabbit, no? With the right lighting and cheap draft beer, it could work out a lot cheaper for you...
