A new book (Sleights of Mind) written by two neuro-scientists: Stephen L. Macknik, Ph.D. and his wife Susana Martinez-Conde, Ph.D. is available and should prove very interesting for magicians. They were interviewed on episode 41 of the magic podcast "Magic Rush" and it is available at http://www.magicrush.net or on iTunes. Some very interesting scientifically magical stuff.

The book's been out for over a year. Lots of errors in it, but you can still get a ton out of it if you read it with a critical eye.

James,
Just curious what the errors are. I enjoyed the book and found it useful. |

I also found it very useful and intriguing indeed, and I didn't notice any errors, though I guess there were.

I really enjoyed reading Tom Stone's comments in Lodestones refuting what these two authors had claimed. Very interesting stuff indeed and Tom's passion for the art of magic was clearly evident upon reading his article.

The main issue, which was very well addressed in Tom's Genii column was that the authors never made any effort to test their explanations. The curved line/straight line was the most blatant example, it sort of runs through the entire book.
There were other things, like a few of the explanations they offered were incorrect, and many more just gave way too much credit to the neurological explanations over the actual mechanical working. And some of the errors were just plain silly. For example, the chapter on Forcing explains a magazine test that doesn't use a force. |

I read Tom Stone's rebuttle article in Genii, it is excellent.
I hope he writes a book on the subject, and if he has, what's the title? |

There is too much that I want to test properly, and the kind of eye-tracking equipment that exist are too expensive and not good enough. Have been trying to design new hardware and software for a while, and I think I know what is needed. But the costs are way out of my league. So, it might take a while, if at all. |
