In a very brief time, I have watched Chanz from Mexico City develop into one of the most intriguing acts on the streets. His silent act set to catchy popular tunes, along with solid command of the participants, make for one highly enjoyable performance on the streets.

He holds his own out there and I'm very proud to work along side him on many occasion. His current inspiration draws from Dixie Dooley with mentoring by Jimmy.

Chanz is going to really make some noise in our community and I look forward to sharing a media project featuring more his work. It is my utmost pleasure to formally introduce him, to the members of our group here.

Let's see now...My name is Chance and I've been performing an escape show on the street since 1994. Pure coincidence, I'm sure....

Chance, do you know Birdie McClain? He is the one that suggested the name to Chanz. If there is a "coincidence" it would lie there. Isn't it great to be an influence on other performers? I know you have definitely affected my performance through our conversations!

His name is pronounced; chawnz. not chans.

it's chawn like yawn or shawn.

he does a silent to music clown/mime act.

walk behind and magic sight gags.

escape is a very very small part of the act, so much so that many times he never even puts an escape in it. depending on his mood and the venue.

birdy liked his silent act, because as many know birdy does a silent juggling act and birdy wanted to take him under his wing.

Birdy, wing, I get it Smile Cute.

Yep, I was there as well and remember one night Birdy giving Chanz some pointers on following people. It was stuff I'd never heard before. The kind of stuff you can only get from a great performer.

Hey Chance! You still in Vegas?

1. Yes I know Birdie.
2. The OP says that this guys inspiration come from Dooley, a well known escape artist, like me. It does not say that he draws his inspiration from, say, Chaplin or Keaton, if you catch my drift.
3. Jimmy, since it's OK in your book, how about I change my name to Jimmee Tawksalot? Spelled different. Sounds a bit different too. Would you still be OK with that?
4. Yes, I am still in Vegas. But it sounds like I may need to crash San Diego some time soon.
5. If I were this guy, I would ditch that name and get something completely original. If for no other reason than to avoid confusion with his own career, to say nothing of mine.

The dooley thing was news to me, I asked chanz about it and he said he got the dvd or something recently and he is just learning escapes like he did magic, mime, juggling, clowning, etc.etc.

his inspiration was chaplin, I know this and if you look up any of the past posts on chanz he used to go by Chaplino and even painted the mustache with make up.

of course he changed this character to try and be more original.

my book is not alright with people cloning, it is oppposed to it.

and so am I to this day.

but chance I don't think this is the case.

if you come to san diego and watch his act and still feel the same way, I will incoourage him to make any necessary changes.

but I am confident that you will not feel the same way after seeing his show and character.

also I would encourage you to call Birdy and see what his opinion is of this.

chanz is worried sick about the whole thing because he has always prided himself in being the most original show where ever he performs. he has been around several show acts including escape acts and never gotten this reaction.

I think if you saw his act you would understand.

but, regardless, if you watch the act and don't change your mind I know he will make any changes because he is one of the most humble and repectful of performers twards those who have been doing it for years like yourself.

please, don't be upset, I can see your position how it appears on the net here but I think if you saw him and his work you will change your mind.

I have tryed to call you, but have been unable to get through. I would be happy to talk to you on the phone if you will call me at home.

So far it seems like this is being judged from a very narrow frame of reference on everyone's part except my own.

Gentlemen, I have performed in 35 states and 24 countries, and for countless festivals around the world. So far, when ever I send out an introduction tape to a festival with the name "Chance" on it, I have been able to feel sure that the name (and the show behind it) are unique in every way.

But now comes a guy who wishes to use escapes in his show, AND he wants to use a name or moniker that could easily become confused with my own. Jimmy, if some one started sending out tapes titled "Jimmee Tawksalot", and it so happened that he did a magic show, be honest and tell me how that would make you feel.

It doesn't matter that I don't know this guy, or that he has never seen my act. It doesn't matter that he only does escapes "a little bit". It doesn't matter that he is Mexican. It doesn't matter that Jimmy Talksalot speaks up for him. NONE OF THAT MATTERS. What DOES matter, at least to me, is that MY name and MY act are likely to be confused with someone else.

Let me tell you guys a related and true story... Along with the name Chance, I also use the subtitle "The Escapist". As in, Chance -- The Escapist. A couple of years back a lady escape artist named Ms. Morgan started using the same subtitle with her shows. She is a long time Café member, and she is also a very skilled escape artist and entertainer in her own right. So I wrote her a quick PM and mentioned that I was already using the title for several years. So what did she do? Did she hem and haw and try to justify why she should be able to keep using it? No. She immediately wrote back and said she would never use it again. THAT'S how a professional does it! THAT'S how a professional behaves!

The only thing I need to hear from this guy is, "Sorry Chance, didn't mean to step on your toes, and I'll never do it again. I sure wouldn't want anyone to do it to me." Anything else is just plain B.S.

Honestly I would be upset if someone stole my name even if they misspelled it.

but if they were "Jammy the juggler" or even jimmy the juggler I wouldn't.

your site books you as- Steven Chance -- "The Escapist"

chanz (pronounced Chawnz)books himself as a silent clown.

his only promo is his facebook and it says chanz florez. which of course would be pronounced latin chawnz.

on the dvd he is in make up, clowning silent, to music.

ONCE AGAIN the pic on this thread is a rare one. when he decided to work out of costume and without make up doing an escape.

here's more what he looks like from an old write up on him when he went by chaplino.

http://sidewalkperformerswhoswho.blogspo......ino.html

if you pm me an address I'll send you the four of a kind dvd to help you make, in my opinion, a better judgement.

all I can say is gad help any kid named Chance that ever wants to street perform.

we can change his name if you feel we have to chance, all I'm saying is please be reasonable before you jump into some kids life without knowing all the facts yet.

I'm right on this one, but we can do the wrong thing a rename him, but if you'll be reasonable and see him you will change your mind. the name suites the new make up and character.

all folks disagreeing with you have seen him.

Chance get you name trade marked if you are that upset about it.Until than you have no case.I don't see why you are so upset anyway. His name is pronounced different as Jimmy has told you.

If someone named Don Driver came out with a Svengali pitch DVD it wouldn't bother me one bit.REALLY !

Jimmy, in the same breath you say that if someone did it to you that it would upset you, BUT that I am wrong for being upset myself. So which one is it? Should I be upset or not?

If I am right to be upset (same as you said you would be), then I am also right to try and put a stop to it.

I am not calling this guy bad names, or trying in any way to attack his personal character. I understand that this all happened by accident. OK, fine. But now he IS aware. Now he DOES face an important choice in his career. And this choice WILL speak to his character and his professionalism.

The choice is not mine to make. I just hope he makes the right one. The one that Ms. Morgan made, and the one that I would make if it were me.

Don, I've been using this moniker exclusively since 1994.

As I stated, if your example were the case I would be upset, but your example is not the case so I wouldn't.

I am getting a lot of calls from this from many veterans who have seen him and know him and know you and are siding with him.

they are siding with him because they have seen the act and they say it doesn't even remotely look like yours and that it isn't an escape act.

it's a clown mime act and Chanz ain't Chance.

and it certainly ain't -Steven Chance -- "The Escapist"

why won't you call me?

why won't you send an address so I can send you a free dvd with footage of him?

C`mon now anyone that wanted to copy Chance has gotta be pretty desperate to start with, what with all the really talented people out there like me,,,who in there right mind would want to copy him his name or anything else.

It does have advantages though,,,,when the Revenue want their Taxes paid you just send them across to the other one.

First of all, why isn't this kid in here speaking for himself?

Second, you sure do seem to be taking this all rather personally, Jimmy. Why is that? What does this matter to you in the slightest? This is about my reputation, not yours. And you not supporting or respecting a fellow professional's 20-year reputation is something I find quite odd to be honest. If some fledgling act came in here calling himself "Jimee Tawksalot" -- or even "Harry Talksalot" -- I'd be the first guy to jump all over it.

As for your various arguments Jimmy, I also do magic, mime, clowning, ballooning, acrobatics, fire eating, glass walking, and much more besides. Chaplin and Keaton are big heroes of mine. My earliest mentor was an "old Hollywood" actor who starred in Our Gang as a child actor. So I guess your "he's really a clown not an escape artist" comment doesn't really mean a whole lot to me, considering my own skill set and history.

This will be my last comment on this until I hear from this guy personally. If he's got the balls to be a busker, then he should have the balls to defend his own actions and choices.

Roger, a.k.a. Chanz doesn't get online much at all. And then when he does, usually he's employs his mother tongue, Spanish.

As to names, I think this is all rather pointless. What does Chanz have to do with you Chance? He's not a knock-off of your act or persona. To perspective clients there's no way (ok, maybe if they were complete idiots) you would get confused with Chanz, that is if your bio is accurate and you have an accompanying head-shot.

Chance, you're making assumptions that seem unprofessional in appearance and substance. You've been doing this for 20 years by your own admission, your reputation is well-established by now.

So do you think that Birdy thought of it for him to create this controversy?

You know the guy in Europe that came up with the King Tut statue? I'm not talking about one of the hundreds of knock-offs, but the original? What's his name? It doesn't matter now because everyone and his brother is doing it in every major city in Europe.

That's getting ripped off. Not what you're going on about here.

Oh ******* please ... nearly everyone on earth shares a name with someone else, usually they share a name with millions of other people. Get over yourself already. As much as I would like to be the only "JoeJoe" on earth, I'm not and complaining about it won't do me any good what-so-ever.

Check your ego's at the door please.

Here ya go Chance ... a list of 37 people (some fictional characters) that have "stolen" your name:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chance_(name)

If you wanted to distinguish yourself, you should have done what I did and add an adjective to it ... "Amazing JoeJoe" ... so maybe "Chance that Magnificent" or the "Great Chance" or "Chance the Escapist" ... something like that. Then you'd have an argument. Otherwise, you sound weak and needy seeking external validation because you are insecure with yourself.

I'm telling you as a friend to just get over it already.

In fact ... I don't even see that you have the right to tell another performer they can't call themselves an "escapist" ... just who the **** do you think you are???

By you criteria ... there can be no other "The Great" ... no other "Amazing's" ... Copperfiled coined the phrase "illusionist" ... should he truly be the person in the world that gets to use that word to describe himself??

NO!!! I'm calling you out on this Chance ... be serious! Listen to yourself! I don't care how many festivals you've done, your not the only escape artist in the world, nor are you the only Chance. Nobody is trying copy you - come back to earth man!!!
