I haven't seen this announced anywhere else, so I am posting it here in the silk section. Francis Martineau passed away last Sunday, January 8, 2012. For those who don't know why this is posted here in the silk section, Francis Martineau was the artist who singlehandedly drew all the illustrations and hand-lettered the entire Rice Encyclopedia of Silk Magic, volumes 1, 2 and 3. His illustrations were also reused to make Volume 4. You can find more information about him in my brief biographies of magic inventors on my site.

Thank you for letting us know, Professor Spellbinder.
The artwork/illustrations added so much to the depth of magic presented in the text. A lot of losses in the magic community the past couple of years.

As someone who just purchased Volumes 1-3 of the Encyclopedia of Silk Magic, I am very appreciative of Mr. Martineau's work. What a wonderful resource. I have just scratched the surface in a first, cursory review of the books.

Very sad Spellbinder,
I had assumed he died a long time ago. As a dyslexic I always prefer books with pictures but I must admit what I really loved about the Rice Books was the hand lettering. It gave the books such a friendly feel. It made the projects more approachable (and working with delicate Silks can be scary). The friendly script and pictures also made these books better than average idea generators. You know, the kind of books you just leaf through to see what ideas crop up? I know Francis Martineau did not write the Rice Books but his contribution a big part of my Love for these books. He did a lot for Silk Magic. I hope his family knows what a fond place he has in many hearts. -Mary Mowder |

I had the opportunity to see Francis B Martineau perform for our club here in Vancouver in the late 70's/early 80's. Such a talented man, he would often come to our club's annual dinner/show functions. Farewell, Francis. More news can be found here http://romhanyreport.blogspot.com/2012/0......his.html

I met Francis and shared his company for a while in the late 70's early 1980's when he was back in Hollywood.
His knowledge of magic, and the performers of his generation made for some fascinating stories... Sorry to learn of his passing.

Francis Martineau was indeed a talented man. He was a clever magician, a great performer, the creator of many valuable effects, and most importantly, a beautiful illustrator. We were fortunate to have his famous illustrations and hand lettering for all three volumes of Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic, as well as many of our silk magic booklets featuring his effects.

Oh, my...I must confess that I assumed he had already passed quite some time ago.
My condolences to his family and friends, and my thanks and appreciation to him for his classy, beautiful work. |

A benefit of art is that it lives on. Thank you Francis Martineau.
Over thirty years ago my old friend Harold Rice told me he was through publishing because he would accept no substitutes for the art and hand lettering in the first three volumes. They were also the last. The old art professor had high standards. "Letter Perfect" had meaning. (Few seemed to know that Harold Rice was an art professor at the University of Alabama before moving to Ohio.) I owe both of you a great deal of thanks. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Martineau was also one Mark Wilson's creative staff during the years of "Magic Land of Allakazam" and the "Hall of Magic" at the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. His art and design was prominent in much of Mark's early work. A very talented guy and a true character in our art.

Francis gave me one of his brochures (back when everybody in the business had them!) from the 60's and it was wonderful!
I wish I still had it. JNeal
