Thanks, I saw that Tony Clarke has a video out which is supposed to be a reworking of the Slydini tear with some Anderson and Elmsley thrown in. I wound up ordering a 10 dollar manuscript on the Anderson tear just to get an idea of whether I want to do anything with this illusion.

The one thing I dislike about the Anderson tear is that almost every magician (local guys and others I've seen) use the same patter Gene uses "It's only an illusion." I am just not a fan of that line as it has been over-used.

There use to be magic dealers that hand to demonstrate magic tricks, so they would work on a patter presentation that they thought went with the trick when they made their soft sale pitch. Those days are gone, now most dealers have not even seen the tricks they are selling. Sometimes they would compile their ideas in a book, and you at least had ideas you could start from to come up with ideas on patter and presentation. So now it is up to the individual to start from scratch with a magic presentation. So we have a need in magic for creative patter for tricks, anyone out there willing to take on the need that needs to be filled. |

Walt Anthony wrote a book called, "Tales Of Enchantment: The Art Of Magic" that explains the process and gives examples all throughout. "Patter" is really an art you create yourself. If this is an area you want to pursue, check this out: http://www.leapinglizardsmagic.com/tales_of_enchantment.htm Also look at the other books available. A goldmine there! Doug |

Most remember that they've seen "that" trick with the rings but how many remember the routine? I can't tell you how many times I've introduce the rings at a party and some kid yells-out how they've seen it before (or they own a set of rings).... after the false C**** and the routine is over, they always come up to me and want to know if it's the same trick because "It worked differently" then the one they had. If you ask the average person about the Sub Trunk, they'll tell you "Oh yeah. That's the trick where the guy got out of the trunk" and half the time they forget about the transposition. Most can't reconstruct what they saw because by our nature, we perform the trick long before the audience is aware - and by the time they figure-out what's going on, we did what we had to do, According to one philosophy - - * there are three types of people. 1. The lion 2. The dog 3. The monkey. Continue... I'm all for original patter and handling - and effects - (I've invented a few) but you have to consider that many lay people look at magicians like performing monkeys (see above *) and don't remember much about the actual content. Yes I said it. Because the usual stereotype lay audiences have, of magicians, is a somewhat cheesy cape-wearing dude that's silly and pulls rabbits from hats, but they don't remember how or when. Incidentally, I use rabbits and sometimes I'm silly,,,, so I plead "the 5th" on all counts - but - I do like to hear interesting new patter.

As Pm'ing isn't an option I'm hoping Bill (wmhegbli) is looking in on this thread as I'd like to ask if he'd be amenable to PM'ing me where I can seek out the repeat version of the Gene Anderson tear?
I've not heard of it until reading this thread and it sounds like it could potentially create the possibility of some interesting presentational ideas that wouldn't be otherwise practical. If it's something that you'd rather keep for yourself though, no worries.

A repeat version?? Tonight I have spent hours preparing the original version from the Anderson stand alone booklet, and my mind boggles at the imagined complications involved in preparing one that you can actually repeat the tear two or three times! Unless there is a switch involved, I would imagine that prepared paper to be an unwieldy monster!
As a magician I don't believe in impossible, but this truly sounds exactly that. Impossible!
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.
