It is great to see that we keep our elitist attitude and continue our belittling of anyone who isn't up to our caliber. Ha! We are the great ones!
And extra kudos to those that attack his lack of English, I mean if you're not a native speaker and can't write it grammatically perfect then you deserve our RATH. Of course we exclude all of us very knowledgeable mentalists that can't distinguish between (there, they're, and their) and (Your - you're) So let’s raise a glass to toast our superior and asinine attitude towards all others that might want to intrude on our territory. That is what the Magic Café is all about…Magicians helping Magicians.. wait…what? Did I read that right…oh-oh, ummmm let me get back to you on this. Oh wait..we're mentalists...so that doesn't apply. |

Trying to be honestly helpful, Corinda is a big gulp if you’re only looking for a small sip. Since you’re more familiar with magic than mentalism (for now), take a look at Mental Epic (any version). It’s about as bare bones as anything I know of, and you should be able to figure out how to bring the idea over to mentalism.
And welcome to the Café.
...what if I could read your mind?

I know there's very interesting one of Daniel Madison, in his 'Dangerous' dvd if I'm not mistaken. It's a card one ahead routine, but a very nice one. Combines that principle and sleight of hand, so it might interest you.
Oh yes, and welcome to the Café! |

Thank you, Tony. My thoughts exactly.
Michael, I will continue to work on my English. This is a new guy to the café… could he have introduced himself better? Sure. Could we have helped with that? Sure… But instead I see the same old attitude of …”You’re not one of us…so let’s attack with our “pack mentality”. Then when its pointed out, we get “No, we’re just having some fun.” Really?? With someone who doesn’t know you, and you don’t know them. Whatever… If it looks like manure and smells like manure…well I just tire of this holier than thou attitude that seem to be in the mentalist section of the café. |

Returning (briefly ) to the original question...
I think that this is a slightly backwards approach. Rather than looking for effects that use a particular method, it might be better to concentrate on what effect you want to produce and then work out (or buy) suitable methods. For example, instead of thinking, "I must use an *** pad. What effects can I learn?" it might be more productive to ask, "I want to demonstrate telepathy using a drawing duplication. What equipment/sleights do I need to achieve this?" Just a thought. T. |

I agree Simon. I think trying to fit a presentation around a method can be difficult and it also stifles creativity (for me at least).
Much easier to think about what you want to achieve and then find a way to do it. The only problem with that process is that newcomers don't have the knowledge to pick/choose and develop methods. Best Sean |

Hi Simon and Shaun
I note the number of posts that you both have in the Café and I completely agree with what you have said and the experience that it must come from. But I just wanted to give a slightly different perspective on why the question may have been asked the way it was. Let me take you all the way back to when you were beginning (somewhere that I'm nearer to than you I'd guess) and the world of mentalism was a new land full of places to visit and explore. Telling someone to figure out where they would prefer to be and then work backwards doesn't help as ultimately their answer will be "I want to explore everywhere and then I'll let you know". I think that often the type of question that has been asked is because the newbie recognises that they have a lot of ground to cover and they want to cover as much of it as possible as quickly as possible. And I agree that this can often mean that they get a sketch map of all the terrain but no detailed maps of any of it. Like I said I'm not trying to correct you, you are 100% correct I'm just trying to refresh in your minds the 'newness' and excitement that creates the urge to cover ground that this guy may be feeling. Respect to all Steve

For the record, johncesta, the English word "natal" means "pertaining to birth". So obviously Alex meant his native language. Although we say "native language" or "native tongue," "natal" is an ordinary English language word. Alex's use of it, although non-standard, can't even be said to be incorrect--just baffling to native English speakers with limited vocabularies.
The mistake Alex did make I find interesting: his spelling of one steap ahead. Even though the term is properly spelled "one step ahead" his mistake is understandable--in fact even logical. The vowel sound in "step" and the second vowel sound in "ahead" are identical. So that mistake is entirely consistent. Unfortunately, as Alex has probably already started to learn, the English language is only occasionally consistent and logical.

Simon and Michael,
I agree...I do like to stay positive and help..and you two have been great. However, it is important to point out to those that are arrogant that it is not accepted behavior. There are a few ways of looking at it: one: Ignore it and say nothing, but then you are enabling the behavior to continue. two: Jump on the band wagon and be part of the cool pack mentality. three: say something so that they know this is not the behavior that most of us want in a forum that should be positive and creative. I have made some good friends in these forums...however there are days that the rude ones do make me want to leave the Café altogether. |

Quote: I agree with "three." It's just that most arrogant people won't care. Though, you could, perhaps persuade those who simply didn't know any better - as opposed to curing the intentionally arrogant.
