Not to perform magic, but still, I expect to see a lot of it and get to meet some awesome magicians. As some of you know, by day I'm a journalist. I've just accepted a job at the Las Vegas Sun, the Pulitzer-winning news organization that's pushing the envelope of the digital news age. Some of what they do is magic, in my world. Anyway, they've offered me the job as casino and gaming writer. Yeah, that's everyone's reaction. Prime beat for Vegas, right? So if you know people in the area, can point me to the nearest IBM gathering, it would be cool to meet some folks when I move out there in a few weeks.

Make sure you visit Denny and Lee's magic studio. I went to Vegas for my brother's wedding and happened to be staying in a hotel about two minutes walking distance from this place. It's a wonderful shop and a wonderful oppertunity to meet brilliant magicians.

Enjoy,

Zac

If you are inclined to eat at a nicer place while you're there, head over to The Forum Shops at Caesar's and eat at Max Brenner's. It's insanely good.

Make sure that you see Mac King's show at Harrahs.

I second Boomer's on Wednesdays. (Magicians and humans welcome.)

The place is a little hard to find, and it's definitely a seedy back-alley vibe, but it's a great place to meet some local magicians.

On a separate topic, I feel compelled to mention the Pinball Hall of Fame, located in another seedy-looking free standing building on Tropicana, a few blocks East of the Strip. Website here:

http://www.pinballmuseum.org/

The proprietor has an amazing pinball collection (including a few choice cabinet-style video games), and all the machines are in great working order. Lest you be mislead by the title, it's not so much a museum as it is a fully-functional pinball arcade. Truly a one of a kind place... if that's your thing.

And congrats on the job!

Siegfried and Roy's Secret Garden at the Mirage! You might bump into one or two Masters of the Impossible! And the dolphins and cats, and others are cool to meet, too. Say hey to Shaka and Indira, and Pride, and the rest for me, if you will! Smile

Jeff McBride's Wonderground takes place each month at the Olive:

And since you'll be living there, why not sign up for a class at his Magic & Mystery School while you're at it?

So, I'm in Vegas, and 3 months later I'm getting established in my new job. I've yet to visit Denny and Lee's but it's on my list. Houdini's Magic Shop is actually on my beat -- geared to tourists inside the casinos. Anyone have info on who runs these? I could do a story on them.

Been to see Penn & Teller, natch, and am working on featuring a story on them that only a magic geek could do.

Looking forward to taking my daughter to Murry Sawchuck at Tropicana on Monday. Nathan Burton and Mac King and Boomer's are on my list, soon.

Having a fabulous time in Vegas. Looking forward to meeting Mickey Silver. This really is a fabulous city city to live and work. Also, just learned that some killer close-up is coming to the Gold Coast, across the street from where I live. Will try to keep you updated and am looking forward to giving magic some press in the mainstream media through my new beat.

Let Vegas magicians know: they've got a friend.
