I have had mentors in many areas of my life. Currently I have four different mentors helping me one helping me grow as a leader and CEO, one helping me learn proper card magic technique, one helping me create, script, block and preform a theatrical magic and vent show and one helping me create and perform a stand up comedy/ventriloquist act and become a better entertainer. I don't think you can really reach your full potential without the inspiration, motivation, constructive criticism and moral support of a experienced mentor. At the very least you need a role model but mentors who are engaged with you and have a desire to share and see their students succeed is unlike anything else. It's very hard to do it on your own.
Being a student and having a mentor is not easy if you want it to be a productive relationship that works for both parties. You have to have a great amount of respect for your mentor and their opinion. You have to be truly willing to listen. You have to throw your ego away completely. You have to be willing to work, work, work. Mentors hate giving assignments and sharing wisdom and not seeing it in action. I am personally a mentor to many business owners and entrepreneurs so I know what it takes. I know what gets under my skin and I know what I want a student to do. So I try to be the student I wished I'd get as a mentor. Good mentors do it because they love to share and teach. They are passionate and they believe they can help others reach their full potential. They want to see that happen. They want to life people up and inspire them. They want to leave a legacy in you. It's really an ancient concept of master and his apprentice. I love being a mentor and being a student. It's exhilarating. School's never out for the pro. We can all keeping learning. Everyday we don't grow we die a little bit. I try to not just keep going for to keep growing. Mentors help me do that with gusto. A big thanks to all my mentors! Jimmy |

I still like to go to workshops in and out of the field of magic and puppetry. One of the most demanding was a movement class that worked on the principle of status. When I first started with puppets, I was literally the man behind the curtain.(traditional show). Then she got me out mixing with the crowd doing a marionette monkey, while she operated the man/organ grinder.
She taught me the importance of matching movement to the music, continuity of the height of the puppet, and prop management.(including prop list) Harris staying green to grow

My friend's dad is a magician. As I saw an opportunity to learn magic from uncle,I took it and after almost ten years,I am a professional magician.Fortunately uncle is a sleight of hand artist and one of the best magicians of my place.Though we had our differences and now I'm probably doing much better than him. It's only because of the business part of the showbusiness. The thing is he influenced me a lot and lot of my acts have their root in his acts.Perhaps the most important thing is as I worked as an assistant and went to his shows ,I easily got the idea to construct, conduct ,routine, modify a show .I learned firsthand -the misdirection, use of legs ,relaxation time ....from him .There are a lot of things you learn from a mentor which a formal school never can.
Now I am the only ventriloquist in my country. So you can understand that none was mentoring me about that.Dickens & Dave helped me a lot to reach this place and I consider him as my teacher.I am still looking for a mentor.Anyone interested?
Magic is believing in yourself, if you can do that, you can make anything happen.
