After searching the Café and putting some thought into it I think this would be the best forum for this question as it is theatrics. My daughter is in Odyssey of the Mind and they would like to simulate fire coming from the palm of a hand. My thought was mylar flames, maybe?
The hang-ups I have are that the kids need to build/assemble it themselves, but I can guide them. What could a 11 year old use as a air current to fan the flames? I would think a pocket fan would be too big to hold in their hand. I thought maybe putting the fan source in a box, or something, and put their hand over it when needed. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to achieve this, even if my thoughts are way off base. I want to try and keep it cheap as they will only perform it 6-7 times, in practice and competition. Thanks for your time.

Okay, let me start this off.
American Science and Supply sells a "Muffin Fan #40608" that measures 2 3/8" W X 13/16" H ($2.75), probably one hand holdable. Requires a 12 Volt DC power source. A body battery pack could be achieved by wiring four Lithium AA batteries in series, Lithium AA batteries are usually rated for 3 Volts, so 3VDC X 4 = 12VDC. FWIW

Maybe buy a fake fire lamp with the lights that you see at novelty stores and hack the parts. That way,you have everything available without hunting for electronics parts and circuitry.

Hi,
What is the exact effect that you are trying to achieve? Realistic fire or a theatrical FX that simulates or evokes the image of fire> Do you want fire "emanating forth" from an open palm or still hand? Or, is it ok to "throw" fire?

Thanks for all the replies so far, they are appreciated. Based on the way they asked me they are just looking for something that can represent fire coming from a hand. They did not have anything set in my but since OM skits are only 7 min in length it would have to be quick, light weight, easy to quickly put on and somewhat concealable in a child's hand.

Possibly David Cresey throw streamers? He has some that are red and yellow that evoke the color scheme of fire. Not realistic looking fire, but a safe and dramatic theatrical effect. Other than that, I would go with the idea that maps provides above. A small Halloween "fire in witches cauldron" decoration may be just the thing to provide the parts you need.
