Outdoor for sure, too hot, or too cold, or too windy.
One show I did sticks out. I show up at a BIG house, and I think GREAT! The house is probably 6000-7000 square feet. The women that hired me tells me I'll be doing the show, (for kids) outside because her house is too small. I liked to have died that day. Going home I noticed on my cars temperature, that it was 96*. I'm sure the humidity was in the 90's as well, and it was in full sun. The kids looked like they were going to die also. |

Anywhere that is too hot. Indoors or out. I don't tolerate heat well at all (and the older I get, the less I can tolerate it). Honestly, I'd rather perform in a blizzard than anywhere it's over 80 degrees.

I must agree with George. There is nothing worse that knocking yourself out in a magic competition, and no one applauds.

I would agree...magicians are the worst group of people to perform for...
1/3 of the room feels threatened by you... 1/3 of the room could care less about you or what you're doing... and 1/3 of the room is writing down your every word and movement so they can steal your act... I'll pass!

I dislike performing at my warehouse. No one pays to see anything but somehow my landlord makes bank.
Other then that... At huge regional parks where they don't give you the grove number and you drive-around looking for them because their cell phone is in their purse THEN you have to park half a mile away and drag your stuff over the wet grass, forever AND there's no electricity like they promised THEN they give you a check from a new checking account (number 103) AND it's from out of state THEN the park ranger comes over and asks if you're on the special list of approved vendors so you tell him you're going to the car to get the paperwork and you drive away hoping he didn't get your name or plate number THEN you're in such a hurry to get out of there that you drive over those spikes and get two flat tires SO you have to call the next show to cancel because you don't have two spares SO you call your friend who says Thanks For The Show... I'll Take Care Of You... and he does, he sends a thank you card with no money but the stamp is only 37 cents so you're asked to pay the difference AND while you're at the post office you pick-up your mail and see a letter from the bank SO you open it and see that the check was bad and you're going to be charged 25 dollars for a show you didn't want to do in the first place.

Ok...I have the extreme of Florida!
I almost forgot about this show It is winter...January I am in Wisconsin...7 miles north of Lambeau Field I am literally on Frozen Green Bay, the body of water ...it is -6 degrees F without wind chill There are 300 people to entertain I am performing a makeshift stand up show and strolling magic show 2 hours, no gloves, of course! There are 2 big tents on the frozen bay Most of the time I am in one of them. I would have loved Florida at that time! :) |

I personally dislike performing at wedding dinner. In singapore, due to chinese culture and traditions, wedding dinners are 3 hr affairs minimal. On some occasions, I've been booked to perform at the wedding dinner, off at one side of the room. Basically the magic show serves a 'nanny' function. The children are 'thrown' to the performer and the adults disappear to their tables for their dinner. Besides that, while performing, it's also a competition between the ongoing 'yum-seng' just outside of the room. ('Yum-seng' is the way Chinese toast each other at weddings and parties. In this toast, you try to prolong the words for as long as possible in the loudest voice that you can use)

For a kidz show, my Roll-On Table plus PA and Backdrop are heavy kit so I hate it when I can't park my vehicle close to the entrance.
Added to that, I hate any venue that is awash with distractions. |

One of the worst is where one of the richest guys in town is having a birthday party. His lackies are in competition and will do their best to sabotage the entertainment that the other brought in. The lighting sucks and the one of the lackies ordered the sound man out of the booth so that the birthday guy can't hear the show. The agent wouldn't tell you who the party is for, or hint at how elaborate the event will be, until you confirmed the booking. One of the audience volunteers has the IQ of a gnat, despite rolling in dough - no ability at all to follow simple directions. If I knew what to expect, I would have charged four times as much and brought a bouncer to sit on the lackie.
The next time that an agent calls, and gets evasive with answers, the quote is going to be huge. It's simply expensive to deal with the B.S. at some events. The Grand Rapids Art Museum is a lousy place to have a stage show!!! |

I agree with Al, pizza places are the worst! I did one show at a pizza place when it rained (the one day it rains in San Diego) and the show was moved inside. I set up and the quaters were so tight I had kid literally inches away from my feet. It was just terrible. The parents wanted to give their kids pizza while they watched the show because I think they thought their kids would starve to death within the next 45 minutes. And despite my pleading to NOT do this, the pizza ended up on the ground, in the hair of one kid, etc. One of my worst performance locations.

School stages that seem to be 20 feet high and don't have step access in the front of the stage. Volunteers have to go through a door and about two days later they make it on stage to help. I definitely dislike performing in those kinds of places!!!

Anything I'm not prepared for (ie anything booked through an agent).
If I'm prepared I can put up with most anything. Always remember that there is a magician somewhere who wants even your worst gig. But personally, I hate it when it's a corporate gig and they fly you first class to Tahiti. Then they make you do a 15 minute gig on a perfect stage with adoring fans and then they insist on paying you ten times your normal fee because you were so good. Hate that. |

I really hate 3 things:
1. When I can't find a parking spot close to the place where I'm suppose to perform. 2. When you have to use an elevator or go up several flights of steps in order to bring in your equipment. 3. When there's a huge distance (think orchestra pit) between you and your audience. (I've actually turned down shows just because of this.) Other than these, I'm fine. Gerry |

George, surely if you were booked to perform on Hoth, inside a Tauntaun would be a good place to do a show? Although a snowstorm effect may be a flop.....
