I thought this was a really solid visual aid to go with "An Essential Secret" from bob cassidy's fundamentals. It's simply amazing to me how simply recognizing what Bob and Derren obviously know very well can allow you to entertain a stadium with a funny uncle trick. |

Lesson to aspiring mentalists, even the pros make use of the Fundamentals
Nicely done by Mr. Brown though. I'm constantly impressed by his ability to handle an audience. |

He Truely is a class entertainer! Was the woman looking for her pound coin back after the effect was finished? I think I heard derren say he won it!

He had wagered her some amount of money at the beginning (can't remember the exact denomination). I think that is what she was asking for.

It is indeed a clinic not only on presenting mentalism in the most engaging possible way, but in a meta sense, a clinic on theatricality. It is why, IMHO, Derren is peerless. It's not simply about WHAT he does, it's about character, premise, story arc, consistency and performance. Every time I watch him I learn another nuance. Every actor/singer/comedian/dancer and, of course, mentalist can benefit from watching Brown.
However, while Derren has produced some wonderful books and DVD's, his contributions to the study and art of mentalism cannot be compared to those of Cassidy's, Annemann's, Maven's, Corinda's, Osterlind's, Banachek's, Koran, etc. They are the giants upon whose shoulders the rest of us stand, INCLUDING Derren. What sets Derren apart, however, is his sense of performance- his incredible feel for the power of theater (and of course, Nyman is a big part of that). But Derren is the one up on stage. There is not one "empty" or "slow" moment in his show, even as he's selecting audience members and calling them up. There is also something else Derren possesses that cannot be taught - the "X" factor that makes it impossible to take your eye off of him. |

The "woman" at the end in the green dress is Lily Savage. The alter ego of Paul O'Grady a British comedian from Liverpool (hence the accent). He rarely performs as her anymore, but he worked his way up the old club circuit using Lily before becoming a TV host (again as Lily) and winning the BBC TV Personality of the Year in 1997. Paul, as Lily, even played the role of Miss Hannigan in the musical Annie back in 1998. Sadly I can't find any video or even a picture of this, but it was awesome. There's a lesson in acting and performance. A person playing a character who's playing a character. The performance could've been a complete failure, but it was pure theatrical poetry. The man's a genius.
Anyway, back to the topic. I've always thought that Derren had that something special. He can certainly be given most of the credit for bringing mentalism, and magic, back to popular entertainment here in the UK. Before Derren there were a few magical TV shows that aired here but none of them had the same impact. I know he's got a great team around him, but as was said before its him that's on stage or in front of the camera. I've seen his routines copied all over the place. In the area I work in, which is currently outdoor events, you get a lot of sideshow performers. His human blockhead and glass walking acts are very regularly ripped off in this environment. None of them are anywhere near as good. But you see them all the time. Its got to the point where I no longer perform glass walking in my show, but still do HB. Although my routine is far from the same as Derren's. Anyway I digress, if you watch Derren's performance of Reminiscence on The Derren Brown Lecture DVD from International Magic you can see how he's applied "An Essential Secret" to this routine too. And not in subtle way either.

Sorry, that should read Paul O' Grady. He also did a stint as Lilly on Blankety Blank if memory serves.......
