I agree! I think that is another great routine! And Im so enjoying reading what everyone is doing with the prop and how the routines vary but are equally strong nonetheless.
I think that with this prop there is such a huge variety in the types of routines one can dream up allowing for alot of orginality and creativity for ones performance. And the fact that it is very easy to perform yet extremely baffling, that it allows the performer to spend more time comming up with a solid routine and less time practicing the actual mechanics behind the illusion. Well thanks... (and my name's not 'Maynard'... but we already knew that, right?) The prop really does the job - it's a solid chain, examinable (if you're inclined to let your audience futz around with a chain-with-wood-on-the-ends) and the effect always kills.
By the by, Harry - If you're willing to share some notes on that 'necklace' approach to securing the 'necessary', I'd love to check that out. I was planning on just using flesh-colored tape, myself...

I had kind of thought about an approach similar to mplegare, with the "you want" crowd build up, only using a white canvas hood, or bag to make it look more like an execution. Then after the chain passes dropping the head to one shoulder or the other, before the reveal. But hey, what do I know, its still in the mail. I hav'nt even played with it yet.

Woops! Matthew!!
So sorry, so very sorry! Mea culpa!! I don’t know where the “Maynard” came from! Maybe it was a flashback from my childhood! You know - Maynard G. Krebs (The many loves of Dobie Gillis). It must be the goatee! OK, OK, lame, I know, I know, Maynard didn’t have a mustache with his goatee. Still he was the coolest cat in the history of primetime! Hey do you know Andy Blau the Toronto magician who performs the Renaissance circuit as Zoltan? He and you use the same catch line/title “the Adequate”. He has a great act (“is that a great trick? Nooooooo just adequate!” Check out Andy’s web site at: http://www.justadequate.com/zoltan.htm The necklace thing (or necklaces as it were): The first is easy as can be. I have a necklace made from a motorcycle chain for my biker persona. It probably isn’t really a motorcycle chain but that is what it is sold as in various novelty stores. The “gizmo” does what it is supposed to right on the chain at the back of my neck. No worry, it goes unnoticed and is secure (and I am a very hyperactive, little, fat man!). I have a nice heavy Celtic knot medallion on a black-waxed cord for a Renaissance costume. I took a tab of metal and hooked it on the back of the cord (directly opposite the medallion). The weight of the medallion keeps the “gismo” in place and ready to steal. What I did was cut a small rectangle from a bit of the proper material, filed the edges smooth, and then, bent one end tightly around the cord. I didn’t like the feel of it so made a small felt bag that covers the rectangle tightly. The rectangle is just large enough to hold the “gizmo”. What I have also experimented with is much simpler. I have a bit of proper material in a very small bag that I have sewn (tacked really) under the neckband of my shirt (right above the label). It works well in holding the “gizmo” at the ready! Finally, I have simply used a square bandage and stuck a small square of proper material under that and stuck the whole thing at the base of my neck. My thought is that if anyone notices after a show, that I will simply say that I injured myself with the chain at an earlier performance. Can you tell that I have no life? Hey Kingstardog, good idea! Neat prop that can get you brainstorming presentations even before you have it in your hands!

I was also thinking of a bigger gimmick sewn in on the hood to get rid of the smaller gimmick. I don't mind being dirty in the handling but always like to end clean.

Good idea! That would clearly work. With a double thick hood then you will appear clean throughout the presentation.

Molto grazzi, Harry, and yes I know of Zoltan. Um... without going into too many details, we have a minor issue over the use of an adjectival phrase and my right to same

Ok we finally have our video demo online! Turn out the lights and turn up the volume on your speakers and enjoy the video.
Our demo is of an eerie theme, but keep in mind that you can play this out as a comedy bit, or serious routine, just take the above example routines that were shared in this thread. The blood effect in our demo is obviously optional. Enjoy: http://www.masterofillusions.ca/mediapage.htm P.

Thanks Guy, we are slowly getting better at that whole video demo thing... Just takes time I guess, but I think we have come along way since our earlier demo videos. Perhaps with our new studio we may even refilm some of our older illusions also.
I just hate putting up live performances of our own show because of the fear that someone may try and copy our live performance. I try to encourage originality with our products and the Iron Garrote certainly has opened up some incredible routines as shared by Harry and mplegare! I may create the prop, but its everyone else who creates the magic! :cheers:Guy! P.

Great video, with some great music! My compliments
I've got the iron garotte since a week and I'm very satisfied with it. I like the volunteer to tell , I can suffocate them with the device. I then make the knot and by thighten the garotte, you can really let the volunteer feel the pressure on their neck . I then say, I won't struggle them, and that I'm going apply another method. The method where the larynx will collapse, which will cause a very painfull dead. I than make some space again between the garotte and take the handles really good in my hand. You have to see the volunteer's face, they are really really scared I would like to know some more (standard) one-liners/gags. I know there are a lot more , but I can't recall them. I also like the line : This is my second time I use this device, and well the first time....(slik, slik) By the way, the video is 5.6 mb big in size. The dial-uppers will have some problems watching the video, so here is the link : http://www.masterofillusions.ca/media/IRONGURROT.wmv And please tell us here some other good one-liners. Thanks in advance! |

I just watched the video! It is excellent! I liked the mood, the music, and the atmosphere you created. Not to mention I really enjoyed your presentation of the effect. I always like seeing how the inventor performs his own trick.
The entire video was well produced, well filmed, and really showed the effect well. A++ work man! Next you will be producing music videos! I guess that the studio is really working out for you. Nice to have the proper equipment isn’t it? I especially liked the drama and theatre created by the blood. What a great touch! It truly adds to the overall effect!

Thanks guys! Mr.Skin I did do a short video to get right to the point for demonstration purposes, but as Harry and others have shown, you can really play this out with a solid presentation.

Peter,
GREAT JOB on the new video demo! I agree with all of Harry's points. I couldn't have said it better. The gooey ending was a great kicker. I think I won't do that version for my Grandma at Christmas dinner I look forward to your new innovations for next year along with the predictably cool video demos to boot! Good luck in the New Year Peter! Your friend, Chance

Yes indeed! *Very* nize...
Oh, an addendum to the "Adequate" handling of the garotte - Instead of speaking in a squeaky voice after the pull-through, I've taken to just mouthing words silently during the applause, then looking a bit concerned and finally "thumping" my voicebox back into place. And I have to say, as a pass-the-hat performer, doing your 'Kindly give me money' speech WHILE the chain is wrapped and tied securely around your neck DOES result in more cash in the hat.

I jsut did a closing routine in a short stage show using the combination of a classic chain on wrists, combined with the Iron Garotte.
I handled the gimmick as was suggested by Santini, and had a flawless performance. The routine went about 8 minutes as I got three spectators, one for each side of the Garotte, and one to do the chain on my wrists. I then also did a fair amount of comedy "concerns" about the danger, and as well as cautions to the audience about the dangeer, and I included a line I have used sucessfully in parlor settings with the Garotte too. As I was preparing to put the chain around my neck, I said "I guess I should take off my hat." (I was wearing a southern style straw hat)" but then on second thought, if my I keep it on, and if my head comes off, the hat may keep my head from hitting the ground so hard I get a head ache" <rim shot>, (It gets a good laugh, and helps cement the picture of what "could" happen, stressing the postenial danger.) then on the count of three by the whole audience, the helpers on both side pulled hard, and the Garotte went "though my neck" and the chains fell from my hands simultaneously. And I sood there hands upraised in triumph! It was great finish, and I got an enormous ovation. Not bad for a $40 trick, eh? I also just noiced this item http://www.zebulonmagic.com/ Head off Shoulders Illusion And am thinking about giving it a try so that I can do the Garotte, and then, just when they think it is over, Drop my head down as with this effect. You get a pdf for 20 pounds, and they claim it can be built for less than 5, so I think I will give it a go too. BroDavid
