I am trying to teach myself various routines cups and balls, zombie ball, dove care etc.. Is there any place I can go like itunes for example where I can just pay to download instructional videos. I know I can just search around the net for youtube vids, but I was just wondering if there is anything popular and quicker rather then ordering DVDs from Ebay and suppliers etc...

First, keep in mind what you are asking. "IF" there were a prevelance of such sites the mystery of magic would be quickly lost. For a few bucks and a few minutes time you could find the secrets that make the art of magic possible. Is that really what you want? If so, why take up magic as a hobby or a profession when it is being exposed and explained everywhere you look? Why bother to learn the methods if eveyone that you perform for says "I know how you did that."? That is no fun for you or your audience.
That being said, yes there are sites where you can download the latest magic effects for instant gratification, but of course you will still need to practice if you intend to present them. I believe some of the sites advertise here on the Café. I'm an old guy, around since before the advent of the personal computer, but I would highly recommend learning from books with a follow-up of DVDs. The book experience makes you think about the presentation more than watching someone elses performance. The more involved you are in the learning process, the faster and better you will learn. You will form questions that you will need to answer for yourself that will put you miles ahead in the game. There are lots of places to buy DVD's but I suggest L&L. Their prices are reasonable, have free shipping and they run great BOGO specials every month. Buy 1 DVD and get a set of 4. That's hard to beat. I would also avoid buying DVDs from E-bay unless you know for sure what you are buying. Not everyone is honest.

Buy these books on amazon (or whatever online second-hand bookseller you prefer). I've quoted the prices I saw online just now:
$1.35 The Amateur Magician's Handbook, by Henry Hay $2.25 Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic $1.43 Modern Coin Magic, J.B. Bobo $2.50 The Royal Road To Card Magic, Jean Hugard Then check the L&L site for good, cheap DVDs. An especially good general start would be "The Secret Seminars Of Magic" Series by Patrick Page, at $12.50 a pop. These are old videos, but it's excellent teaching and advice. Their "World's Greatest Magic" series is good too. |

I have to be honest I don't work well with books when it comes to routines.. I find the DVDs or vids help more, maybe I am just a visual learner. I am on that L&L site now I like this. So thank you for this. Geeesh I paid like $35.00 for that Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic book.. I wish I knew about this site earlier.

I find naving the RRTCM DVD and the book is very helpful. Sometimes the book gives you the extra details that you didn't catch from the DVD. At other times the DVD is just what you need to clarify something in the book that seems confusing.

Get a used copy of the tarbell books on ebay. You will never need a DVD or any other book.
almost EVERYTHING can be traced back to an entry in tarbell - and its what the pros putting stuff out now learned from.

Harry...
Other than your own books and DVDs (which are excellent), which books would you recommend to newbies that will help them speed up the learning curve? I think a lot of folks would be interested in your thoughts.

Don't engage Mr. Lorayne - besides did you not know that it's hip to be illiterate nowadays with indolence coming in a close second, it's the rage man.

Actually, at this point, I'm genuinely curious if he covers dove magic in any of his books.

That wasn't my question, Harry. My question was, do you cover dove magic in any of your books?

Ok. So it turns out Tarbell is a great recommendation for the original poster after all. Good to know.
