I wouldn't call it a speech; that's the last thing an audience wants to listen to. I'd call it a warm-up, which might be a two-minute opening of one liners, quickie prop gags or tricks that lead to your opening routine. It's also designed to get the audience on your side before you begin your routines.
One of my quickie prop gags, with adults at least, is to merely hold up a rubber chicken by a blue rope tied on his neck. Hold it there for a few seconds. Look at it, look at the audience, and simply say Chicken cord on blue. Not my original idea by the way, someplace in here is a thread about the use of rubber chickens.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

I give my opening speech or "bally" after my edge builder.
I lay out my name, what I'll be doing and the rules of the show; takes about 30 secs and then I move right to the first effect on my set show. One thing I've found, though- DO NOT STATE YOUR NAME AGAIN UNTIL *AFTER* YOU ARE FINISHED WITH YOUR FINAL EFFECT! 9 times out of 10, the audience will take it for the end of your routine and walk away (assuming you're busking/ect).

I have 40 seconds to two minutes of jokes.
Then I get the entire audience involved in a fun interactive illusion that I call crossed hands. (I am not sure what you call it, but in the end of the 30 sec effect, their hands are "tied" in knots and yours are not. Everyone falls for it and laughs at themselves. It is a great opener/warm-up...it gets people in the mood. I have a few more jokes...then In get into my main magic routines. |

I start with introducing my self and saying I am about to show you some magic but I case your wondering what magic is. Its simple you take on thing and make it appear as somthing else. As I say this I am taking the ribbon of my hat. once the hat is back on and runn the ribbon throw my handes and the last word leves my mouth the ribbon becames a cane. Its quick fast and gets attion. Its nice to have a easy effect to do so you can watch the audiance a work out whats to do with them. I follow with a rope routine with a few jokes sligthly on dioffrent lkevles so I can find out more about them.
Sorry that a bit more than a opener but hope it helps.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

If you start with a silk vanish like you say then you may find there is some comedy in explaining how you went to an invisible shop and bought an invisible silk. But you may have been conned because the silk isn't invisible. Then make it disappear.

I start my show off with bowlarama
this shows I'm legit and funny (I make weird faces and grunting noises when I produce the ball) then I give a 2 minute intro of my name my background and. what I do etc then I go into the rest of the show I think thy it's important to show something before you give the "speech" otherwise they will tune you out quickly since they don know if your any good yet |

John Archer gave a good talk at The Session about dividing your script into comedy, magic and other. Walking on and repeating what your name is after you've just been introduced is 'other'. And 'other' should be minimised.

I start my show off with my appearing cane.
and go into a story about when I was 8 years old.i went into my first magic shop and their was a magician doing some amazing silk magic with just a silk and a empty left hand. it was amazing baffeling and bewildering.i then vanish the silk. and say that was amazing.i then bring the silk back.and say that was the baffeling and bewildering part.and from that point on I was drawn into magic.hook line and sinker. |

I start off with either Ribbons to Dove or Cane to Flowers. I keep it short with the introduction, next get in to magic.

[Enter stage or approach center stage with a wand, gesturing to emphasize the following]
"Good afternoon/evening everyone! My name is Leland Edward Stone/Charlie Lutton and I'm here to do a MAGIC SHOW! A good magic requires a friendly, smiling audience and I see you've got that covered. We'll also need a Magician, and I brought one with me. Of course, we'll need a Magic Wand... " [Wand Spin] "...and a Magic Word." [For a kid show, I'll ask for a Magic Word from the audience. For adults, I simply move on.] "We're also going to need some Magic Noise." [Pause, quizzical look or double take at the audience.] "Wait, you ...you don't know what MAGIC NOISE is, do you? That's all right, I'm gonna help ya out with that one. Here, everyone, extend your LEFT hand in front of you, flat, like this..." [Do as noted.] "Now, take the first finger of your right hand, and tap it on your palm. Good! Now, add a finger, and tap a LITTLE bit faster...yeah, like that! Okay, this is where it gets tricky, one more finger...a little faster...now the last finger, and SLAM those hands together... " [By this point the audience gets that Magic Noise is applause.] "That's it, you're making MAGIC NOISE! Use that anytime during the show you see something you enjoy!" [Smile, go into your next routine.] This is my go-to opener for kid and adult shows. Ham it up, have some fun with it, I find it gets the crowd unified and breaks the ice! Leland |

I like that.. lets the audience know its ok to make some noise.. Sometimes, I feel as though audiences feel it is out of place for them to applause, like they are ruining the atmosphere, but that couldn't be further from the truth since we are really there for them. Very nice Leland
