Nightcrawler, thanks very much for the tips on smoothing halves. I will give your method a go as soon as I pick up a new dremel.
ShawnB, while I am certain Lassen's soft sets are fantastic, I do not have the funds available as I am a simple hobbiest (sp?). I can, however, afford sandpaper and a few hours of time. Oh, and the cost of Blacken-it as well I suppose Cheers |

You're welcome CarpetShark.
Meanwhile I got my first Walking Liberty half dollars. They are worn down, but not too much. I was really surprised, when I found out that they are much more quiet than my softened Kennedys! So if you already used silver coins, don't expect too much from softening Kennedys... About the aging process/success: My very first Walker was quiet shiny and I wanted to apply the softening and aging process to it. Softening worked quiet well and for the aging process I used something similar to blacken-it. Translated to english it would be called tin-patina. To take the black color partially off, I tried different sandpapers (from 320 up to 1200). 320 sandpaper produced big scratches on the coin. The 1200 sandpaper worked better, but the result was still bad!!! It best worked with silver polish (NOT the one with little korns - this is like the sandpaper). I rubbed the black color off with a rather think cloth that I folded twice. So I had 4 layers of cloth between by fingers and the coin. The less layers you use, the more black color you will loose. First I was not so happy with the result, but after working with the coin for few days it looked more natural. Meanwhile I ordered 4 more Walkers from ebay. On the pictures they had this nice patina look. When they arrived I saw, that in reality they look like my artificially aged coin =) Sometimes I need a closer look to identify my self aged coin. What didn't work at all is aging a 1964 Kennedy. The result looks so terrible and I'm not sure why. Nightcrawler |

Don't know if this will help people in tracking down worn/soft coins, but I remember long ago it helped me track down some, mix & match style. Good Luck!
